Students will be introduced to various hand-building techniques including pinch, slab construction, coil construction, combinations and glazing methods. Students will learn to create, critique, evaluate and appreciate the visual arts from a combined personal, historic and cultural point of view. Ceramics I provides a means to develop visual literacy and communication skills. This course is a prerequisite for Ceramics II, and also helpful as a prerequisite for AP Art 3D. This course may be taken for dual ACC credit.

Behavioral Expectations:

-Be respectful—we will be sharing and reviewing each other’s work and it is essential that we maintain a safe, positive, and constructive atmosphere at all times.

- Be on time—coming in late can be very disruptive. Please do not interrupt the class. If you come in late, it is your responsibility to make sure that you clear the tardy with the attendance office and bring me an admit slip.

- Be careful—abusing or misusing materials and supplies will not be tolerated.

- 20-Minute Rule—School policy requires that we remain in the classroom for the first 20 minutes of each period, so use the restroom during your passing time.

- Breaks—Only 2 students may leave the classroom at a time. No Exceptions! Students will use the sign out sheet and hall pass when leaving the classroom for any reason.

- Group critique—This is an important element of our class and will be essential for establishing the positive and safe atmosphere that we need to work well together. You are required to be polite and respectful when others are speaking.

- Watching videos, playing games, or other inappropriate use of personal or school devices during class time will result in a referral.

- Plagiarism of any kind, including attempting to pass off someone else’s work as your own will result in an automatic zero for the assignment and a referral.

- Attendance is mandatory. Students who miss class for any reason are expected to communicate with the instructor and make up missed work on their own time. See Open Studio Hours.

- Artwork relating to the following will be subject to disciplinary action and automatic failure of the project: Drugs, drug use, paraphernalia, drug references (including tobacco and alcohol), swearing, offensive language, racist, sexist, or other hateful or derogatory content of any kind.

Grading:

Grades are based on completion and quality of unit projects, written work, presentations/critiques, and studio skills*. All count toward the student’s final grade. If you require additional time due to unusual circumstances, please see me before the due date to talk about an appropriate timeline to complete work.

*Studio skills = evaluation of students as productive and positive participants in group activities and care of our shared studio space, this includes attendance, being on time to class, clean up and maintenance of materials and work space.

-Grades will be updated regularly and should be accessible online at least every two weeks.

-Students seeking help can visit during Open Studio Hours or by appointment.

-Students may also get help at the Academic Center, after school on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. from 3:30 to 5:00.
