Objective and Professional Background
I seek a post-doctoral position to gain research experience in reading and language disorders. I am particularly interested in the reading and language learning problems of bilingual populations.
My dissertation focuses on the identification of reading problems in Spanish, a more or less transparent orthography, and in establishing links between reading problems in the native language and difficulty in learning English as a second language.
My background as a bilingual speech-language pathologist has provided me with ample experience on the language, reading, and overall academic problems faced by English language learners in an urban setting such as NYC.
I am also interested in the language and reading problems faced by bilingual indigenous populations in Latin America (Aymara- and Quechua-speaking, learning to read in Spanish). Their reading and language problems appear remarkably similar to the reading and language problems often found in bilingual populations in the United States.
