Course Description

The course was written by collectively by Brian Page; Michael Roush, a national director with the National Disability Institute; and Chris Shannon, who has written coursework for VISA, NEFE, and FEFE. The course meets the Ohio Department of Education state standards for financial literacy.

The course is designed to provide students with the foundation of money management skills they need to make basic informed financial choices.

The units are as followed:

A.Currency and the American Dream: Summarize the role money plays in the US economy and in society.

B.Fund your American Dream: Explain different methods to maximize your take-home pay.

C.Plan for your American Dream: Develop a financial plan.

D.Keep your American Dream on track: Develop a personal guide to reduce spending.

E.Invest for your American Dream: Develop a saving and investing plan.

F.Find tools and resources to reach your American Dream: Choose a financial institution that meets your personal banking needs.

G.Borrowing to build your American Dream: Investigate your potential need for and access to credit.

H.Empower your American Dream: Apply money math to day-to-day transactions.

I.Protecting your American Dream: Devise a plan to minimize financial risk.

J.Get support for your American Dream: Determine how your need for public benefits might change over time.

The course will develop the following core abilities:

• Critical thinking skills

• Taking responsibility for personal actions

• Demonstrate effective use of technology

• Establish effective learning strategies

Text/Materials You Need For Class

-Something to keep your assignments organized (agenda book, mobile phone, etc)

-Folder

-Electronic Folder labeled “Personal Finance” on your desktop with subfolders labeled after each unit.

-Pencil

Classroom Rules

-Follow all Reading High School rules outlined in your student manual.

-Do not in any way disrupt the learning environment for yourself or others. (If you are on YouTube or surfing the Internet when you should not be it is an automatic detention)

Course Policies

Class Participation – students are expected to be engaged and add to the classroom environment through appropriate behavior, insightful thoughts, and relevant questions.

-Grading Categories

-Tests – 20%

-Classroom Assignments & Homework – 60%

-Character Points – 20%

-Grit, Self-control, Resilience: Each are defined on the online classroom. Character traits are exhibited during classroom assignments, discussions, and are necessary for homework completion. In previous classes you may have received ‘participation points’. I believe these character traits are a more appropriate way to teach you behavior skills you will need to bridge content understanding with financial behavior.
