Derek Baines: Your new Vicar
An introduction
Born in Harrogate in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1953 – Yes I am a “Westy” and proud of it! I grew up on the edge of Harrogate and had school friends within the farming communities of the Yorkshire Dales. My Dad’s work took him out to farms dealing with ‘Lucas’ electrical components and as I grew older I would go out with him and learn about sheep and cattle as well as the engineering side of farm life. When I was older I took summer holiday work on a pig farm and on a mixed hill farm driving tractors and lorries to lead hay from the fields as well as learning about the animals, so I have always enjoyed, and to a small degree, understood the rural aspects of our countryside. I became a student Physiotherapist and completed my training in 1975. I had met Sharon during the course and we were married in 1976 and lived in Steeton in West Yorkshire until 1981. We ‘emigrated’ to Lancashire to the village of Trawden as I moved from St James’ Hospital, Leeds, to Burnley General Hospital. Andrew was born in 1978 and Heather in 1980 in the Airedale hospital so Sharon, my ‘Essex girl’, has 3 Yorkshire members of her family to put up with!! One of my hobbies at that time was work on the steam railway at Embsay, near Skipton.
I left Burnley in 1986 and arrived in Chorley and South Ribble to take up the reins of Superintendent Physiotherapist and eventually I became the Head of Physiotherapy Services in the Chorley & South Ribble PCT. In 1999 I was accepted by the Church of England to train for the Ordained Ministry and attended the Carlisle and Blackburn Diocesan Training Institute (CBDTI).
I was ordained Deacon in 2002 and licensed to Lostock Hall St James’ as NSM Assistant Curate. Later that year Farington Moss St Paul became vacant and the then Bishop asked me whether I would be prepared to stay for longer than the usual 4 years as Curate because he wanted the two parishes to work towards becoming a

Joint Benefice. I said yes. I was priested in 2003 in Leyland. I continued to work full time as a Physiotherapy Manager. I had a clinical role in Children’s Services dealing with babies and toddlers with foot, lower leg and walking problems.
In 2004 I transferred within the PCT to work as Business Change and Clinical Engagement Lead with the Information Management service working to move staff from paper to electronic records. I still worked with the babies & toddlers as a clinician. I have had a privileged career and worked at regional and national level within my profession.
Sharon, a licensed Pastoral Assistant, joined us in the parish and in 2005 she explored the calling to the Ordained Ministry and was accepted for training which commenced in 2006 and, in 2009, she was ordained Deacon and licensed to St Leonard’s Parish in Penwortham where she still ministers as NSM Assistant Curate, having been priested in 2010. Andrew married Julie and they have 2 boys, Finlay and Edward, a lively 3 ½ yr old and 1 year old! They live just outside Stroud in Gloucestershire where Andrew follows his career as an archaeologist. Heather lives in Bridlington; she works as a specialist solicitor.
In 2008 I retired from the NHS and became a part time self employed Business Change Manager and worked with various healthcare records projects in the region and finished my time in healthcare at St Catherine’s Hospice as we successfully deployed an electronic record for all staff. In April of this year I started part time work with a funeral directors firm in Chorley.
Within the parish, the vicar retired in 2008 and I ‘acted up’ looking after the pastoral and liturgical sides of 2 parishes with the assistance of a team of parishioners and retired clergy – a true collaboration. I have been responsible for setting various things up with others – a Christian Youth Group, the Emmaus course and now a Bible study group. I instituted a regular mid week evening prayer

session and experimental worship led to the setting up of café services to encourage a different viewpoint for our younger members. All of these things take a long time to set up with negotiation, discussion and prayer. If they are not right they won’t work but God gives us directions so over the next few years who knows where we will go – Word of warning we do not rush, and take small steps together over a long period of time!
My hobbies include photography & I think that I am pretty good! Sharon & I enjoy walking and motorcycling (I am a member of the South Lancashire Advanced Motorcycle group) so you may see me arrive in leathers.
As a clergyman you would expect me to be interested in steam locomotives and as I have said – I am – the family bought me a footplate ride this year so tradition within the Church of England is kept alive folks!
I enjoy working with children and (sometimes) teenagers. I think that I am a ‘people’ person; I am told that I am certainly a chatterbox; I do have a wacky sense of humour and enjoy a good laugh.
I look forward to joining you in the ministry within the villages and farms that comprise the parish of St Michael and All Angels.
So there you are, a short CV with an overview so that you know what you are getting and I look forward to meeting you on or after the 13th October.
God bless you all. Your brother in Christ,
Derek
Ladies’ Group: As our speaker for last month was unable to attend, we were extremely lucky to have Sue Jeeves giving us a very fine slide show accompanied by music about “My favourite things” which featured life in lots of its guises – particularly striking were the photos of wild winter weather!
This month we invite the Men’s Fellowship to join us for “The Life of an Exciseman” with John North, at 7.30pm in the school hall. All welcome.

Harvest Festival and Supper: Grateful thanks and appreciation are expressed to all those who decorated the church for Harvest Festival – the colours and arrangements were exceptional and everybody obviously worked extremely hard to achieve the finished result. Many thanks also to the people who gave items for this.
The Social Committee must also be thanked for their hard work for the Harvest Supper – we all enjoyed the supper and the Last Night of the Proms programme from Amarillo, not to mention the singalong and flag waving.

Christian Aid - Good Will Supper: Saturday October 15th at 7.00pm
On the evening of October 15th, Christian Aid are holding a Good Will Supper in St Andrew’s Church Hall, Longton, starting at 7.00pm. Anyone in the Preston area is welcome to come to this event.
The idea is promoted by Christian Aid to encourage people to consider leaving a legacy to Christian Aid and also to their local church or other charity in their will. After the meal there will be an opportunity to talk to a solicitor about this, without making any commitment. People may then follow this up in their own way.
The evening itself will take the form of a buffet meal with a sweet, provided by Bryn Cottage Catering of Much Hoole. The cost will be £12.50 which will include wine or soft drinks and also coffee and mints.
After the meal there will be a short presentation on the work of Christian Aid. We are hoping that a Christian Aid partner from Mali (West Africa) will be able to join us on the evening to tell us about his work there.
The solicitor will then say a few words about the procedure for leaving a legacy to a church or charity. The programme for the evening will end with some light musical entertainment - and afterwards the solicitor will be available to talk to those who wish to see him.
If you would like a ticket for the evening - or a menu or other information - please have a word with Cath Greenlees: 01772-613500
(The solicitor will be Christopher Matthews, a Methodist, who is Head of Wills and Planning at Dickson Haslam).
