Objectives:

1.The students will use the Internet to download and save a file from ETRIP.

2.The students will use Microsoft Word to format the font and line spacingof a poem.

3.The students will use the drawing tools and Clip Art to add graphics to the poem.

4.The students will print the poem using the following skills: Print Preview; Changing the Printer; Print.

Procedures:

Get Started with the Internet

1.Open the Internet and navigate to ETRIP(Students > ETRIP).

2.Select Pre K - 4Lessons2nd Grade LessonsScience.

3.Scroll down and find the Lungs link - click it.

4.Click the Lungs Poem link.

5.Choose Save.

6.Click the down arrow of the Savein box and navigate to the desired location.

7.In the File name box, click behind the word Poem and have students type their name.

8.Click Save.

9.Close the Internet.

Open the Template

1.Go to StartProgramsMicrosoftWord.

2.Go to FileOpen.

3.In the Lookin box, click the down arrow and navigate to place the students saved the file.

4.Have the students find the file and double click it.

Format the Title

1.Press the Enter key two times.

2.Press the UpArrow key (small keypad between the alpha keys and the number pad keys) two times.

3.Type the student's name.

4.Highlight the poem title, Lungs, by clicking and dragging over it.

5.Go to FormatFont.

6.Select the following:

  1. Font = Comic Sans
  2. Font style = Bold
  3. Size = 26
  4. Font color = Red

7.Click OK.

8.While the title is highlighted, have students click the Centericonon the top tool bar.

9.Go to FileSave.

Show Undo, Redo and Delete

1.Explain to students that mistakes can be "undone" by clicking the Undoicon on the top tool bar.

2.Show students how to "redo" something by clicking the Redoicon on the top toolbar (the title should now be "back").

3.Have students highlight the first line of the poem and press the Delete key.

4.Click the Undoicon to have the text reappear.

5.Go to FileSave.

Format the Poem

1.Highlight the entire poem by clicking and dragging from the first line of the poem through the end of the poem.

2.Go to FormatFont.

3.Select Comic Sans as the Font and 20 as the Size.

4.Click OK.

5.While the poem is still highlighted, go to FormatParagraph.

6.In the Linespacing section, click the down arrow and select Double.

7.Click OK.

8.Highlight the letter L at the front of the first line of the poem.

9.Use the buttons on the top tool bars to change the Size to 26, the Style to Bold, and the Fontcolor to red.

10.Repeat steps 8 - 9 for the letters U, N, G, and S.

11.Go to FileSave.

Drawing Tools

1.Click ViewToolbars in the top menu.

  1. If Drawingis not checked, click it.
  2. If Drawingis checked, click on a blank portion of the page.

2.Click the Line tool icon in the Drawing tool bar at the bottom of the screen.

3.Click and drag to underline the first line of the poem. If students have trouble drawing a straight line, hold the Shift key while dragging to make the line straight.

4.Click the Line Styleiconand select 4 1/2 for the thickness. Make sure the line is selected (handles on it).

5.Click the down arrow beside the Line Coloriconand select red for the line color.

6.Go to FileSave.

7.Draw and format a line under each line of the poem by repeating steps 2 - 6.

8.Go to AutoShapes (bottom toolbar) > BasicShapesSmileyFace.

9.Go to a blank area of the page and click and drag to draw the Smiley Face.

10.With the Smiley Face selected, click the down arrow beside the Fill Coloriconand select Yellow.

11.Resize the Smiley Face by clicking a corner handle and dragging in toward the center of the picture.

12.Double click the Smiley Face and choose the Layout tab.

13.Make sure Tight is selected and click OK.

14.Select the Smiley Face and move it out in the margin at the end of the first 2 or 3 lines of the poem.

15.Save.

Insert Clip Art

1.Go to InsertPictureClip Art.

2.Type lungs in the Searchtext box.

3.Click Search.

4.Find the desired picture and click the middle of it to insert it into the poem.

5.Double click the picture and choose the Layout tab.

6.Make sure Tight is selected and click OK.

7.Click the center of the picture and drag it to the bottom of the page.

8.Resize it if needed.

9.Save.

10.Highlight the word lungs in the clip art Search text box and type runner.

11.Click Search and find a picture to put in the poem - click it.

12.Resize it to fit at the bottom of the poem.

13.Double click the picture and choose the Layout tab.

14.Make sure Tight is selected and click OK.

15.Click the picture and move it to the bottom of the page.

16.Save.

Rotate and Flip

1.Be sure the picture has handles (click on it if it does not) and click Drawin the bottom tool bar (far left).

2.Select Rotate or Flip.

3.Select Flip Horizontal.

4.Save.

Print

1.Go toFilePrint Preview to see what the poem will look like when it prints (make sure everything is on one page).

2.Click the Close button at the top of the window.

3.Make any necessary adjustments.

4.Click FilePrint.

5.Select the color printer.

6.Click OK.
