Piano Class

Course Description:

This is an introductory class, designed for learning how to play the piano. Learn the basics of reading music from the Grand Staff. Play a series of scales and chords on the piano. Begin to sight read music with fluidity. Students will perform a piece of repertoire which has been practiced and learned throughout the semester, and this will serve as the performance section of the final exam. No experience required, and all students are welcomed.

Measurement Standards Addressed:

  1. NMS #2 Performing on Instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
  2. NMS #5 Reading and notating music.
  3. NMS #6 Listening to, analyzing, and describing music
  4. NMS #7 Evaluating music and music performances

Required Course Materials:

·  3 Ring Binder, 1 ½ inch, college ruled paper inside

·  Tabbed dividers (5 tabs)

·  Pencil/pen/agenda

Student Learning Goals:

·  Students will learn to read music, from the Grand staff

·  Students will perform rhythm and rhythmic figures, confidently and independently

·  Students will demonstrate musicianship

·  Students will perform music that has been prepared

·  Students will sight read music

·  Students will give solo and group performances

Please note**** Students are expected to practice on a Daily basis. Although homework may not be dictated every class, it is a constant and ongoing effort from the student that will assure success in this class. Learning a new instrument will be unsuccessful without repetition – so PRACTICE and you will do well! If any student would like to use the lab after school, or do not have a piano at home, feel free to email me, and we will arrange a lesson (free of cost).
