Organist/Director of Music Wanted
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Salem, Virginia seeks a music director to further develop our established music program. The Music Director is an integral part of St. Paul’s ministry. The music program at St. Paul’s is grounded in the Episcopal tradition, while open to music from other repertoires when appropriate.
St. Paul’s was established in 1852. The current Church building was built in 1910 and our campus sits in the center of downtown Salem, Virginia. The organ in the church is a Noack, opus 126, 1994, Georgetown, MA, 20 stops/2 manual instrument. We also have a Steinway Grand Piano (1936) in the Nave and a five-octave set of Schulmerich Handbells and a three octave set of Malmark Choir Chimes.
The music director will be expected to sustain a good working relationship with the rector, choir, and staff. They must also have experience in choral directing and organ performance and experience in the Episcopal church is preferred.
Qualifications
Minimum Education - Bachelor’s Degree, preferred
Experience with choral directing and development of choral musicianship
Experience in organ performance
Experience working in the Anglican musical tradition is preferred
Experience working with youth/children’s choirs is a plus
Required Skills
The ideal candidate will possess a strong musicianship, including knowledge of church music, vocal instruction, conducting, rehearsal/time management, and instrumental proficiency. As a ministry leader they will create a spiritual foundation for the music program. Excellent communication skills and ability to interact well with clergy and staff, singers of all ages and abilities, and parishioners and visitors. This position requires a motivated, energetic person with commitment to excellence.
Duties
Coordinate the selection of all music with the rector
Provide music for weekly Sunday worship services
Provide music for weddings and funerals (additional compensation provided)
Lead weekly choir practice
Develop the chancel choir’s musicianship
Develop the bell choir’s musicianship
Develop and coordinate the children’s choirs
Provide details to the church office for preparation of service bulletins and review drafts for accuracy
Maintain and work within the budget for the choir and music programs
Arrange for tuning of all musical instruments
Manage and oversee the music library
Choose and purchase music within budgetary parameters
Communicate information about the music ministry within the parish
Attend weekly staff meetings and planning meetings
Set specific office hours with the understanding that part of the schedule will be flexible and determined by ministry schedule
This is a part-time position, approximately 30 hours per week
