A WORD FROM THE MGC PRESIDENT:

by Captain John Warren

I thank each and every member for your support and for the trust you have placed in me to manage the club’s affairs during the next two years. I can’t tell you how honored I feel to know that you elected me, the second “puti” President of the Mabuhay Golf Club. I look forward to the many challenges and want to personally thank you, the members, for your support and vote of confidence in me. I am looking forward to working very closely with the new Board of Directors in maintaining the integrity, professionalism, and high standards our club has established over the past years.

Let me be the first to congratulate each of our newly elected officers and express my sincerest appreciation to my predecessor, Rey Singson, for his leadership and dedicated effort he supplied to our club. Our club’s financial bank account is strong and our membership roster is ever increasing. Rey should be acknowledged for his hard work and exemplary service during 2004. Thank you Rey! Also, I would like to thank the previous officers for their hard work and dedication throughout this past year.

A number of people who have been on the Board for the last several years return: Rey Singson, Mar “de kolektor” Lagrisola, Tony Limgenco, Mel Zagala, Ron Tolman, Pem Manalang, Jeff Goh, Rico Naguit, George Angeles, Boy Tan, and Mike Scott. We also have new board members, Rey Balenbin, Joe Villamil, and Bruno Baronia. Obviously, we are very fortunate to have a strong board of directors composed of such dedicated and hard working individuals.

I also appointed various committees pursuant to our by-laws. Each committee chairperson will provide a written report of the committee’s activities as appropriate to the Board of Directors during each Board meeting. In the near future, Committee Chairpersons will be making assignments to each committee. Below is the current list of the various committees.

Membership Committee: Chairperson Gerry Sy

Bylaws Committee: Chairperson Bruno Baronia

Handicap Committee: Chairperson Bruno Baronia

Social Committee: Chairperson Tony Limgenco

Tournament & Rules Committee: Chairperson Rey Balenbin

Election Committee: TBD

In December, we held our club’s Annual Christmas Party at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Burlingame. The food and entertainment were outstanding. I would like to personally thank Tony Limgenco for making all of the arrangements and coordinating the activities throughout the evening. Everyone had a great time. I would also like to thank Natoy Almeda and Ron Tolman for their roles as Master of Ceremonies throughout the evening.

Our tournament schedule for 2005 looks to be very exciting. Tony Limgenco has already booked not only our familiar courses like Franklin Canyon GC, Santa Teresa GC, and Monarch Bay GC, but Seascape GC in Aptos and the beautiful Poppy Hills GC in Pebble Beach. In addition, the venue for our Annual Summer Classic trip to Reno has been changed for the upcoming year to Sacramento. Tony Limgenco has picked out two beautiful golf courses in Sacramento for this two-day tournament: Lincoln Hills GC & Whitney Oaks GC. Followed up by our club championship at Poppy Ridge GC & Shadow Lakes GC. Great job Tony!

I would like to congratulate our 2004 Club Tournament Champion, Tony Limgenco and 1st Runner-up, Rey Balenbin for their outstanding golf match. I would also like to congratulate our 2004 Match Play Champion, Patrick DeBorja and 1st Runner-up, Estoy Estrada for their match. Finally, congratulations to Gerry Sy for winning 1st place in Class B championship in the PAL Mabuhay Miles golf invitational held last November at Canlubang GC in the Philippines.

My three principal goals for our club in 2005 are very clear and somewhat simplistic:

First: Continue having fun and not take this game too seriously. Our club is not just about golf, it’s about friendship and being compassionate and doing everything we can to assist our fellow members in need of support.

Second: Increase our club membership.

Third: Improve upon the written and oral communication to our membership.

Some objectives:

The Mabuhay GC Newsletter will (shall) be distributed via US mail and through the email system to all members within 14 days following every tournament.

In order to improve upon this communication, the newly elected board of directors voted to develop and fund for a new Mabuhay GC website on the Internet that will accessible to MGC members and guests.

Following our first Board of Directors meeting on January 28, Tournament Director, Rey Balenbin, designed and developed this new website for our club. You can log on the website at “mabuhaygolfclub.com”. The user name is “mabuhay” and the password is “player.” The user name and password is deemed confidential and should not be released to anyone outside our club’s membership. There are telephone numbers, email accounts, and financial information that should remain confidential. This new website contains the following information:

Tournament Schedule

Tournament Tee Time Schedule

Tournament Points

Match Play Schedule

Tournament Flight Champions

Membership Application Forms

Sponsorship Listing

About Us (history of the club)

Photograph Gallery

There has also been some discussion on providing membership the opportunity of listing advertisements for their businesses at a nominal fee. This will be discussed in the near future. I would like to recognize and thank Rey Balenbin for his dedication and exemplary work in designing and maintaining this new website for our club members. Rey has worked many hours on this project and should be congratulated on a job well done. Thank you Rey! Take a look at the website and if you have any suggestions please give me a call.

I would also like to welcome new members to our golf club. This year our new members are: Al Aquino, Santi Arrieta, Albert Cisneros, Jojo Espiritu, Nes Morales, Mel Palomares, Ramon Reyes, Rev. Raymund Reyes, Tony Berdal, Ador Arcalas, Pol Cabang, and Ollie Cruz. Welcome aboard guys!

Believe it or not, we’re back! At least those of us that participated in this year’s PAL Interclub Golf Tournament in Bacolod. There were five teams that MGC members participated in. These teams were Brotherhood, Green Hills, Mabuhay, Skywest, and Stanford. We did have some good news from some of our membership. The Stanford (regular team), captained by Tony Limgenco, finished 1st Runner-Up in the Friendship Division of the 58th Annual PAL tournament. Congratulations to all Stanford team members, Tony Limgenco, Rey Balenbin, Charlie Foronda, Rod Berdiago, Fred Ison, Cesar Rodulfo, Tom Haidlen, Jose Balenbin, Nestor Salangsang, and Ed Anicete. The Stanford Team was the only international team to place in the 2005 PAL interclub tournament. Congratulations also go out to Rey “Kidlat” Bautista of Team Skywest (regular) for receiving the top point scorer in the Friendship Division. Rey scored a two-day total of 58 points. Great job by all!

On March 20, 2005 we held our first golf tournament of the year at the Franklin Canyon GC in Hercules. Our sponsors for this tournament were the “Barkada Amerikanos” (Mike Scott, Don Griggs, and John Warren). Congratulations go out to Flight A Champion, Pol Cabang, whose gross score was 83 and net score 69 and 1st place Runner-Up, Bobby Rius, with a gross score of 85 and net score of 71. Congratulations goes out the Flight B Champion, Gerry Sy, whose gross score was 88 and net score was 72 and 1st place Runner-Up, Jun Cusing, with a gross score of 91 and net score of 74. Finally, congratulations goes out to Flight C Champion, Tito Gonzales, whose gross score was 84 and net score was 64 and 1st place Runner-Up, Estoy Estrada, with a gross score of 84 and net score of 65. The four lowest net scores (Tito Gonzales, Estoy Estrada, Pol Cabang, and Bobby Rius) qualified for the upcoming NCGA Club Championship scheduled for May 4, 2005. We also had five winners for closest to the pin on the par 3 holes. Congratulations to Fred Ison, Ron Tolman, Wally Guisande, Rey Balenbin, and Gerry Sy. Great job by all!

Our next tournament is scheduled for April 17, 2005 at the Seascape GC in Aptos. Costs are $75.00. This tournament is a two person best ball and match play event. Your pairings (partners & match play opponents) will be randomly drawn prior to the tournament. Judging from the current list of competitors, I am predicting another year of intrigue, suspense, and stupefaction.

Procedures for Match Play are:

Tiebreakers: If the match is tied after the 18th hole, a count back will be applied to determine the winner starting from the 18th hole with the winning score based on the player’s adjusted net score (i.e., player 1 gets a stroke on the 18th hole against player 2, player 1 scores a bogey and player 2 scores a bogey. Player 1 wins the hole based on net score and wins the tiebreaker).

Re-Scheduled Matches: If player 1 is unable to meet with player 2 and player 2 is playing at the scheduled MGC Match Play Tournament date, player 1 defaults the match unless player 2 agrees to re-schedule their match. Re-scheduled matches must be completed 5 days before the next scheduled MGC Tournament / Match Play Tournament. If Player 1 re-schedules match with Player 2 then player 1 is responsible to pay the green / cart fees at the re-scheduled location. Failure to re-schedule the match before the deadline will result in an automatic default by Player 1.

Handicap Adjustment: Handicaps used during the match play will be the same as the course adjusted tournament handicap assigned to each player by the MGC VP of Handicap (Bruno Baronia). Check with Bruno for the match play adjusted handicap on re-scheduled matches.

Scoring Errors: A separate scorecard for each player will be provided for the Match Play Tournament. Players must track their match play score separately from the regular tournament scorecard. Match Play scorecards will be matched with the Tournament Scorecards for consistency. Any discrepancy or inquiries to the score under the match play scorecard will be adjusted using the tournament scores submitted. A disqualified player from the regular tournament automatically loses in match play.

Procedures for Two-Man Best Ball tournament:

Teams: Randomly drawn prior to tournament.

Scoring: Best adjusted net score will be used by the two-person team (i.e., Player 1 has 18 handicap. Player 2 has 10 handicap. On the 17th hole Player 1 & Player 2 both score a 4. Player 1 with handicap of 18 gets 1 adjusted stroke. Net adjusted score would be “3” for the team). If Player 1 has a 20 handicap he would receive 2 adjusted strokes on the 2 most difficult handicap holes (i.e., Player 1 scores a 5 on the no. 1 handicap hole. His net adjusted score would be “3”).

Tiebreakers: Utilize same procedure as in regular MGC Tournament Play.

The MGC Tournament Director will advise you on your tee time schedule, partner and match play opponent. Winners from this tournament will also qualify for the upcoming NCGA four-man best ball tournament scheduled on July 6, 2005.

See you all at the next tournament!
