Common Core Activity using SmartArt Graphics
Objectives:
1. Learn how to use SmartArt Graphics in cooperative groups
2. Research Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs
3. Cite Sources
Directions:
Learn – In your groups (10 minutes)
1. Using Word’s Help feature, Microsoft Office On-line, Google, or Youtube, research how to insert and format Smart Art in a Word Document.
Prepare – In your groups (10 minutes)
2. In Word,
a. In the first line, key “SmartArt Graphics”
b. Format this to be Title style.
c. Press Enter
d. Change the style to No Spacing
e. create a list of steps for creating SmartArt.
f. Create a list of steps for formatting borders and shading on the SmartArt, Adding levels, and deleting levels in SmartArt.
3. Save the document as SmartArt_Instructions in your Chapter 7 folder.
4. Print the list of steps for each member of your group
(10 minutes)
Apply – Individual Product (60 minutes)
5. Research Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
a. Find an Article (Not Wikipedia) that explains the different levels in Maslow’s Human Motivation Theory
6. In a Word Document key a brief description of each level.
a. Key in the name/type of the need
b. Format the name of the level to have the Heading 1 Style.
c. Press enter and change style to No Spacing
d. Key the description on the next line.
7. Save the Document as Maslow_Your_Name
8. Insert a pyramid shaped SmartArt graphic
9. Place examples of each need in the SmartArt levels, placing the physiological needs in the bottom and then placing the higher level needs in order going up.
10. Fill each level with a custom color.
11. Change the borders to be any color other than white.
12. Resize sections to be taller if you need more room for your information/text
13. Change font sizes to 12 pt in all levels
14. Change the text wrapping of the SmartArt graphic to be Square
15. Place a WordArt beside each level that shows the Name of the need for each level
16. Below the SmartArt, place a text box to cite your source
a. "Web Page Title." Name of website. Copyright Company, n.d. Web. Date [in format of 24 Feb. 2009].
17. Place a footer in the document with your path and file name.
a. Update the footer if necessary.
18. Save the document again.
19. Print Preview the document and print in color.
