ASIADOC 2016

SOUTH EAST ASIADOCUMENTARY

SCRIPTWRITING RESIDENCY & COPRODUCTION MEETING

PHNOM PENH - CAMBODIA/ FEBRUARY22 – MARCH 9, 2016

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Deadline: January 23rd

Program funded by the French Ministry of Foreign affairs (audiovisual cooperation in ASEAN), the Goethe Institute in Vietnam and the German-French Fund for Culture (Elysee treaty)

How does an idea become a documentary project? How to develop both the story and the esthetical vision hold by the author? How does a project become a script? How can the film one dreams of become reality?

These are some of the crucial questions of documentary filmmaking that have first to be answered or at least clarified by scriptwriting. This means also that project holders do not remain isolated and that they, from scratch, be confronted to other people's points of view: it is true that writing is a single-minded activity, but filmmaking needs joint efforts. Based on this idea, we are looking for talented documentary film authors/makers to participate in this Asiadoc residency in Phnom Penh.

A. Organisation and Set-up

Outline

6 to 12Southeast Asian*documentary film authors/makers will be hosted in a writing residency for a two weeks workshop, aiming at:

-Carrying out a diagnostic and detailed critical analysis of their projects;

-Developing an actual documentary script for their project;

-And finally, carrying out exercises in rough video sketches.

* Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam.

Set-up

The residency will take place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, at the Bophana Center, from February22ndto March 5th2016*.One trainer from Germany, writer and director himself, will mentor the programme. One trainer from France might accompany him if 12 projects are finally selected.

*Please note that the dates may change and will be confirmed at least one month before.

Programme

A collective study group coordinated by the trainer for each of the projects will include:

  • In-depth analysis of questions of “subject” and form; collective viewing of any of the trainees’ earlier productions as well as films from the documentary film heritage;
  • Individual research work: screening and interpretation of films related to the project’s formal themes and issues;
  • Individual tutorials with the tutor: analysis, preparing to scout for locations if relevant, examining the different possible options before location scouting;
  • Shooting exercices;
  • First stage of rewriting the project
  • Collective and individual analysis of reworked projects after research and location scouting;
  • Final draft of the project, in constant coordination with the trainer.

The most developed documentary projectswill have the opportunity to attend the co-production meetings, which will take place in Phnom Penh right after the residency, from March 7 to 9. Filmmakers will be able to pitch their project to producers and broadcasters from Southeast Asia and Europe.
