Year 5 Curriculum Information – Autumn Term 2017

The information detailed below provides an overview of the topics and objectives which will be taught in Year 5 during the Autumn term. The learning for pupils across the year band will be differentiated to meet their needs, and the planned activities and learning may change based on arising opportunities.

Subject / Learningand activities
English / This term, the children will be focusing on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, where they will look at different language features with a view to writing their own descriptions. They will be using the text to answer of range of reading questions as well as using Bug Club to improve their readings skills. The children will also be designing their own sweets and writing an explanation text about it.
Maths / This term, the children will be concentrating on trying to master place value and calculation to deepen their learning.
Science / The children will look at how Earth and the Moon orbit, along with the planets and their distance in relation to the sun.
Topic / The children will be learning lots about Space this term, with lots of science and geography included.
PE / Year 5 have started the term by learning all of the skills needed to play a game of tag rugby.
RE / Sikhism will be the main focus of this term, looking at religious views, celebrations and practices.
Music / This term, the children will be looking at different pieces of music, linked with planets, from different composers.
PSHE / Jigsaw lessons will be the source of all of the PSHE lessons, with the first focus of ‘Being me in my world.’

The children will be attending a trip this term linked to one of their topics. As soon as the trip has been finalised and confirmed,we will inform you of this. Thank you.

Ways you can help your child at home:

  • Bring in items linked to the topic where possible
  • Encourage your child to read every day and discuss what they have read.
  • Practise multiplicationfacts for all times tables.
  • Help them to practise their spellings each day
  • Where possible, give them the opportunity to write about different things in order to encourage them to practice different writing skills.
  • Encourage them to do their homework in a planned way.
  • Encourage appropriate letter formation
