POLITICO: Commerce senators show strong support for rural airport funding
At a hearing this morning, senators showed no signs of interest in President Donald Trump's request to defund the Essential Air Service, with some offering personal vignettes about the air service and its importance to rural America.
"Particularly in rural America, the places that all of us come from, our ability to connect with the rest of the world is often determined by access to air service — commercial and private," said Sen.Jerry Moranat a Senate Commerce hearing.
"So if you care about rural America, you’d better care about rural America’s airports."
Sen.Gary Petersand 18 other senators sent aletterto the Senate Appropriations Committee today asking that the program be preserved.
Trump's fiscal 2018 budget proposed eliminating the program, though that hasn't found support among senators. Similar efforts have also failed, though in recent years Congress has instituted some new curbs.
