Course Description

Chorus is a music elective which will fulfill the fine arts credit for the year. In class, students are taught the art and mechanics of singing including breath support, posture, vowel formation and diction. These skills are then applied to performances throughout the year.

Class Materials

The following materials are to be brought to class every day:

  • Folder
  • Lined paper
  • Pencil
  • Singing Exercises
  • Octavos (sheet music)

The students will receive one of each supply listed. It is the student’s responsibility to maintain and replenish the supplies as needed.

Please provide a box of tissues or hand sanitizer for the group by Monday, August 22nd.

Classroom Expectations

  • Follow all classroom rules
  • Be prepared for class with all materials
  • Tardiness will not be tolerated; a pass will be required
  • Follow rehearsal procedures

Participation and positive attitudes are essential in the classroom. Expectations are high and class time will not be regarded as play time.

Non-Negotiables

The following behaviors will result in immediate consequences:

  • Disrespecting other members of the ensemble (i.e. poking fun, teasing, touching in a harmful manner)
  • Chewing gum or eating in the classroom (choking hazard and performance obstacle)
  • Using profanity or other inappropriate language

Consequences

  1. Verbal reminder
  2. Parent notification
  3. Parent notification and oral report on classroom expectations
  4. Parent notification and lunch detention
  5. Referral to the office

Grading

Chorus is a performance class. Therefore, the bulk of the student’s grade will be based on what is observed during class. There will be assignments, both written and oral, to be completed outside of class time.

Independent Practice – 20%

  • Breath Support Progress Charts
  • Voice Care and Technique Assignments
  • Preparation for Singing Tests

Performances – 30%

  • Concerts
  • Singing Tests
  • Performance Evaluations

Performance Attire

Girls:Long black skirt (below the knee) or black pants

White blouse – ¾ length sleeve or long sleeve

Panty hose

Black dress shoes

Boys:Black dress pants – NO BLACK JEANS

White long sleeve dress shirt

Black tie

Black dress shoes – NO ATHLETIC SHOES

Performance Dates

Dates are to be determined.

Concerts begin at 7:00pm; students report at 6:30 pm

*Parents will be notified in a timely manner of additional performance opportunities

Student Agreement

I have read the course information for Chorus. I am aware of the classroom expectations, and I will accept the consequence should I not meet those expectations. I further understand that performances are mandatory. My final grade may be affected by not attending concerts.
