Hours worked: 37 hours per week 40 weeks per year

Department: Learning Programmes

Reports to: Education Manager Supported Internships

Manages/Supervises: Job Coach

Project Background

Steps into Work is an Internship Model. A multi-agency partnership programme bringing together an Employer, National Star College with a shared goal of developing sustainable pathways into employment for students with disabilities or health conditions. The model is designed for students who have a learning disability and whose goal is to enter paid employment at the end of the course. It is an unpaid internship programme that supports transition, providing opportunities to learn in the workplace and experience an extended supported work placement.

For young people the programme provides the opportunity to access the world of work through developing employability skills in real work placements. The focus for students is for them to become more independent with a high quality working experience which allows them to gain critical personal and social skills as well as qualifications which are often harder to achieve via current training methods.

The aims for the student are to:

·  Develop their vocational, English and maths skills and experience of the workplace

·  Increase their confidence and life skills needed to access employment

·  Increased potential for gaining paid employment upon completion of the programme

The student is also supported by job coaching in work. The job coach will analyse each placement prior to the student starting and this will be complemented by an element of ‘vocational profiling’, which involves assessing each students’ skills and preferences to ensure that they are placed on the most suitable placements.

They also benefit from having a tutor who is located within the employer business and has the responsibility for developing personalised learning programmes and capturing learning, enabling young people to accredit their achievements. The advantages are the tutor has access to real employer processes, documentation, work ethic and support to ensure that the evidence and learning are current and real.
