FAQ’s about playing Girls Lacrosse at BHS

When does the season start? Pre-season conditioning starts in December and tryouts begin at the end of February or the first week of March. Practices begin immediately following team tryouts. The competitive game season runs from late March or early April through mid-May. The Varsity season can extend into June if the team makes playoffs.

How often do the teams practice and play games? Practice is held every day after school and occasionally on the weekends. Each team plays 1-2 games per week. The 2017/2018 game schedules can be found on the BHS Athletic Website under Girls Lacrosse.

What are the teams?

  • Freshman/Sophomore (Fresh/Soph) teamis for Freshman and Sophomore girls who have either no experience or less than 2 years’ experience of playing lacrosse. It’s a nurturing environment where girls learn the game. Juniors and Seniors are not allowed on the Freshman/Sophomore team.
  • Junior Varsity (JV)team is for Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors who are experienced players and are ready to take their game to the next level. Girls begin to learn advanced skills and set plays to prepare for playing on Varsity.
  • Varsity team is for the most talented players, regardless of age. Players work together to become the best team possible, with winning as the main goal. Playing on Varsity requires commitment since the team plays extra games and attends out-of-town tournaments during Spring Break.

Are there cuts? There may be cuts depending on how many girls try out. Each of the three teams takes between 22-24 girls. The girls will be informed of which team they are on before the Code Meeting on Saturday, March 4th.

What does it cost to play lacrosse?Currently, lacrosse is a club sport and is not financially supported by Barrington High School. Therefore, player fees are assessed to cover all expenses, such as coaches’ salaries, equipment, officials pay, tournament costs, transportation to games, and indoor practice time. The cost to play lacrosse for the 2017 season is $650. In addition, players are responsible for their own uniforms and equipment. The uniform fee is $120. These fees are to be paid in full at the Code Meeting on Saturday, March 4th at 11:00 a.m. We aren’t able to accommodate payment plans. No refunds will be given for players who aren’t able to play due to injury or illness.

Starting in the 2017-2018 season, lacrosse will be an IHSA-sanctioned sport, which means the school district can elect to pay for the sport. We are waiting to see if the school will fund the team next year, and hope to hear back soon.
