Suggested Route for practical assessment:

Therapist: Select a level area for completion of basic driving skills and set up 2 orange cones.

Instructions for client:

·  Starting in the store area head through the store area to the car park

·  Using 2 orange cones complete basic driving skills of the assessment. Figure “8’s”, U-turn, 3-point turn, reversing and going forward on straight line in car park, reversing through cones on an angle and driving forward through cones

·  Head through store area corridor and out to front lawn area. Use scooter on “rough terrain” – turning left, right on cue and stop, start on cue

·  Go up ramp to Mareeba Building and complete 3 point turn on veranda and then come back down ramp

·  Go to beginning of round about at front of entrance and request client to go around round about and come back to beginning. Focus on uneven ground, speed humps so speed control and being aware of traffic

Therapist: If basic driving skills passed safely, continue with assessment of skills in local community.

Instructions for client:

·  Turn ® onto footpath and go west on Belmore Terrace.

·  Cross road to continue up Belmore Terrace- problem solving as difficult corner – client to cross further up and then come back to Belmore Terrace

·  At Woodville road turn ® and continue along footpath

·  Cross over High Street North. Speed can be adjusted at this stage to faster speed

·  Cross over Harvey Street West. Go around bus shelter

·  Cross over Stanley Street.

·  Cross over Beaufort Street and continue up Woodville Road until reach controlled intersection – pedestrian lights. Client to push button and cross Woodville Road when safe.

·  Do a “U-turn or 3-point turn” then client to push button and cross back over Woodville Road when safe.

·  Turn ® and head back down Woodville Road

·  Turn (L) onto Beaufort Street on North Side of Road

·  Cross Road at round about – corner of Park Street North (Heavy traffic area around 3.00pm as school nearby)

·  Travel along footpath and cross over Stanley Street

·  Travel along footpath and cross over Harvey Street West

·  Travel along footpath and cross over High Street North

·  If further assessment required and client going to use scooter on public transport then go up railway ramp, cross tracks and come up on train platform.

·  Finishing at the back gates of Domiciliary Care – head through store and park scooter. Remove keys, transfer off and walk around.

·  Cease assessment
