DOUBLE LAYER HAT PATTERN

Photos of the hat follows the pattern.

The hat is worked in one long piece, like a sausage.

Size: med-large

Supplies:

·  200 gm Knitting Worsted Weight yarn (I used old Patons "Decor")

·  4.5 mm dpn needles

·  4.5 mm 40 cm circular needle

·  marker or loop of yarn in contrasting colour

·  darning needle

Gauge: 20 sts to 4 inches

With double pointed needles, cast on 9 sts leaving a long tail to close up the hole. (The first couple of rows are hard to do because of the small number of stitches). Being careful not to twist the stitches, join the knitting and increase in every stitch around (18 sts).

Row 2 and all even rows: Knit.

Note: As you are increasing, you can switch from the double pointed needles to the circular needle.

Row 3: *K1, increase in the next stitch, repeat from * around (27 sts).
Row 5: *K2, increase in the next stitch, repeat from * around (36 sts).
Row 7: *K3, increase in the next stitch, repeat from * around (45 sts).
Row 9: *K4, increase in the next stitch, repeat from * around (54 sts).
Row 11: *K5, increase in the next stitch, repeat from * around (63 sts).
Row 13: *K6, increase in the next stitch, repeat from * around (72 sts).
Row 15: *K7, increase in the next stitch, repeat from * around (81 sts).
Row 17: *K8, increase in the next stitch, repeat from * around (90 sts).

Knit 40 rows.

Decrease 9 sts evenly around (81 sts).

Work 30 rows in K2, P1 rib.

Increase 9 sts evenly around (90 sts).

Knit 40 rows.

Decrease Rounds:

Row 1: *K8, K2tog, repeat from * around.

Row 2 and all even rows: Knit around.

Note: As you are decreasing, you will have to switch from the circular needle to the double pointed needles. Do so when the knitting gets too tight.

Row 3: *K7, K2tog, repeat from * around.
Row 5: *K6, K2tog, repeat from * around.
Row 7: *K5, K2tog, repeat from * around.
Row 9: *K4, K2tog, repeat from * around.
Row 11: *K3, K2tog, repeat from * around.
Row 13: *K2, K2tog, repeat from * around.
Row 15: *K1, K2tog, repeat from * around.
Row 17: *K2tog, repeat from * around.
Row 18: Knit around.

At this point you can make a I-cord tail at the top of the hat (as in the photo), or you can cut yarn, leaving a long tail and run thread thru remaining stitches, pulling tight, knot, and weave in on the inside.

Run thread thru the stitches at the cast on, pulling tight, knot, and weave in on the inside.

Now take the cast on edge and push inside to form two layers.

thank you for all your input I have decided to make a layered mitten just like the DOUBLE LAYER HAT because I just do not know how to knit DK with only one colour I would like to try the DK but will start something just a little easier

This is the finished hat laid out flat.

Hat with the ribbing down and with the ribbing turned up.

Note the way the variegated colours formed their own pattern. Photo on the right is the truer colours.

Hat made by Sarah Flemming for her DH, and described as:

The yarn is Reynolds Baby Alpaca (90% alpaca, 10% wool) in Brass (more like mushroom). Since the yarn was bulky worsted I used a 4.5 mm (US #7) needle but 84 stitches with 30 rows top and bottom and 20 rows of ribbing. This too almost all of the 2 balls of yarn. I took a couple stitches in the top of the inside to anchor it.
