ENSTAR Natural Gas Company is accepting applications for a regular full-timePayroll Specialist (Anchorage).The Payroll Specialist, under general supervision, prepares payroll for 180-250 employees on a biweekly basis. This is a non-exempt position and reports to the Accounting Manager.
Essential Job Functions:
- Preparing employee timesheets for processing.
- Processing payroll in computerized accounting system, including printing checks and payroll reports.
- Preparing quarterly and annual tax reports.
- Assisting with monthly account reconciliations.
- Preparing vouchers for payment of payroll-related items.
- Preparing data file for direct deposit payments and working with cash management to process direct deposit and positive pay.
- Preparing ACH/wire requests for payment of 401k funds and payroll taxes.
- Communicating directly with employees and supervisors, and responding to inquiries in a clear and timely manner.
- Ability to work closely with HR department to maintain accurate employee records.
- Understanding and complying with contract requirements for represented employees.
- Strict adherence to deadlines.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (Associates degree or higher preferred).
- Minimum of five (5) years of related work experience in a Payroll department or Accounting department; experience working with an automated payroll preferred.
- Valid Alaska driver’s license or state-issued ID.
- Knowledge of Payroll department operations, payroll regulations, and payroll taxes.
- Ability to pass background and credit check.

- Ability to prioritize work, multi-task, and timely complete projects.
- Ability to make independent decisions and to respond to short-notice changes in daily activities.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Outlook) and knowledge or ability to quickly learn other personal computer business software applications presently used by the Company, including J.D. Edwards.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment used by the Company.

Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment. Work involves sitting at a desk, answering and speaking on the telephone, and operating personal computer equipment for extended periods of time. Duties may also involve occasional bending, stooping and lifting of up to 25 lbs. unassisted. Occasional travel to various worksites may also be required, depending on assignment.
