Green Island - A Paradise off the East Coast of Taiwan
GreenIsland, once known as "Fire Island" is a small island located 33 kilometers in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South Eastern Taiwan . Having a population of 2000 on an area of 16,2 square kilometers, the island was formed by volcanic action which left a curved and complex coastline. Coastal beach terraces and cliffs drop to colorful coral reefs where schools of tropical fish make their abode. Along the shoreline, white coral beaches can be found and numerous coves which lead into warm tropical waters.
GreenIsland is extraordinarily rich in both species and absolute quantities of marine organisms. Fish, shellfish, and coral give the most striking indication of this abundance, and sea snakes, sea turtles, and other vertebrates are also seen there in large numbers.
The climate is tropical and any time is good to visit especially fall and spring. April to September is hot and also the Taiwanese peak season- and also typhoon season. December and January are the cooler months (20-30 Deg C), but also offer great visibility if you like diving and the warm Japanese current that ensures comfortable water temperatures . Activities here include diving, snorkeling, hiking, salt water hot springs and fishing. There is not a lot of nightlife here, except for the nightly parties down at the hot springs (one of only three seawater hot springs in the world!).The hot springs are open all-year around.
If you would like to dance with waves, do you know how warm the seawater around GreenIsland in tropical zone will be in winter? Around 25 degrees Celsius, meaning comfortable swimming in super huge bathtub, the Pacific Ocean. How about summer? Of course, an extremely clever way to cool down burning hot sunlight. What’s more, oceanic views are wonderful no matter how the weather is. Troops of pretty tropical fishes still swim freely around various coral reefs, few precious coral biological resources in Taiwan, despite rain drop on the waves. Even though there is no sunlight seeming like splendid transparent curtains floating and the colors of undersea world a little fade, it still amaze with touching beauty. Plus, snorkelers can enjoy the fun of snorkeling during whole year. Just change sites in different seasons because of changes in weather conditions—southwestern monsoon will blow from May to September so northeastern sea area is an ideal diving spot while it is totally adverse cases from October to next April.
How tosnorkel in GreenIsland? All you have to do is breath and relax. Wear swimming suite before heading to snorkeling. Your leader will give you proper suite and a mask with breathing tube at store. And lead you to appropriate snorkeling site. The leader will teach you how to use the mask and what you can do if salty seawater pours into your mask. After short teaching, it is time to snorkel. Firstly, stretch your body, hold a life buoy with your hands, make yourself relaxingly float on surface of blue sea and look down amazing undersea world.
Some of the other areas to visit include the prisons and prison visitor centre, the lighthouse, Kuynyin Cave ( containing an interesting temple with a stalagmite dressed up in a cape to represent the deity Kuanyin), and a trail that leads to the top of Huoshao Mountain (an extinct volcano -the lava that flowed from it created Green Island ). Unspoiled white beaches are to be found all around the island. Please note that the prisons are a "must see" and the prison visitor center offers an in-depth insight into Taiwan's modern history
GreenIsland offers visitors and expats in Taiwan a great getaway option with spectacular snorkeling and diving options. Life here is relaxed and at slow pace. The people are friendly and go to great pains ensuring our guests visit a pollution-free,clean island.
