Texts: (1) Digital Signal Processing, by Proakis and Manolakis

(3rd Ed.); (2) Digital Signal Processing Using MATLAB, by Ingle and Proakis .

1. GRADING: The only people who will receive grades for ECE 713 are those who are listed on the final Grade Report roll from Registration and Records. Everyone who is listed on this roll will receive a grade. Your semester grade will be computed as follows:

In­Semester Tests (3): 70 %

Final Exam: 30 %

2. QUESTIONS IN GRADING: Changes in test/exam grades will only be considered within one week after the test/exam is graded. Grades will not be discussed via e­mail or over the telephone. E­mail and telephone are best used to set up a time for you to meet with me if a discussion of your grade is necessary.

3. IN­SEMESTER TESTS: There will be three closed­book, closed­notes tests during the semester, given in the class period in the classroom. Calculators may be useful. You may use ONE 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper (front and back) for each test for formulas, etc. No test grades will be dropped.

Test dates are

Friday, Sept. 13; Friday, Oct. 11; and Friday, Nov. 15.

If you miss an in­semester test, a grade of zero will be assigned. There will be no makeup tests given

for in­semester tests.

4. FINAL EXAM: The final exam is required. The Office of Registration and Record's web page at

www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/reg records/fall exa.html has listed that our final exam will be given on Wednes­

day, Dec. 11 from 1 ­ 4 pm. The final will be closed­book, closed­notes. You may use THREE 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper (front and back) for the Final Exam for formulas, etc. The location for the final will be announced in class later in the semester and posted on our ECE 713 Home Page. If you miss the scheduled final, a grade of zero will be assigned.

5. CREDIT/AUDIT: To receive a CREDIT ONLY grade (S or U), a B­ average or better on all material (in­semester tests and final exam) must be achieved.

6. E­MAIL: To facilitate a timely response to e­mail, observe the following when sending e­mail to me:

a. In the SUBJECT line, put either ECE 713 QUESTION or ECE 713 APPOINTMENT, depending on whether you have a question about course material or wish to set up an appointment time to come by my office.

b. Send only text messages without Attachments. DO NOT send Attachments.

c. Issues concerning Test/Exam/Course grades can not be resolved by e­mail. Meet with me to discuss these issues.

d. Issues concerning an inability to attend class can not be resolved by e­mail. Meet with me to discuss these issues.

7. TEST/EXAM INFORMATION:

(a) DETAIL: Show all your work. Correct answers without supporting work detailing the process will not receive credit. Showing your work and steps allows you to receive partial credit.

(b) FIND/COMPUTE: The terms FIND/COMPUTE will be used interchangeably. They mean: (1) Evaluate numer­ ically everything that can be evaluated numerically. This may require using a calculator. (2) Evaluate all fractions as decimal numbers. (3) Evaluate all functions (like exponential, logarithm, sine, cosine, etc.). (4) Evaluate all radi­ cals/powers like square roots/squares, etc. (5) Evaluate all special symbols, like e, p, etc.

(c) PLOT/GRAPH/SKETCH: These terms will be used interchangeably. Label the parameters on each independent­ variable axis being plotted. Label the function being evaluated on the dependent­variable axis. The function should be plotted over a large enough range to demonstrate the important properties of the function.

8. EXCUSED ABSENCES. All in­semester tests and the final exam, taken at their scheduled times, are required course work. Only one excused absence is allowed from the in­semester tests and the final exam. To request an excused absence follow the procedure below:

1. Write a formal letter to me (typeset, not handwritten), dated and signed, stating your specific request and the reason you are asking for an excused absence. E­mail will not be accepted for this purpose.

2. Along with the letter, provide documentation supporting your request. Do not have people, organizations, etc. fax documentation to me. Do not have people, organizations, etc. e­mail information to me.

3. Bring this letter and the documentation to me in person before the requested date (if an absence is foreseeable ) or within one week after the absence, if it is of an unforseeable nature. At that time we will discuss your request. Without this letter from you and the supporting documentation, I will be unable to determine if your request merits an excused absence.

Making a request does not guarantee that you will receive an excused absence. If you are granted an excused absence from a test, then your final exam grade will be substituted for the zero originally assigned to the missed test.
