Event Description: / During the 2010-2011 school year we received a partnership grant from MillerCoors to purchase software called Reality Town (www.realitytown.com). The event was designed for high school students to learn about choosing a career, receiving a “paycheck” and paying for monthly bills. This hands on simulation helped students understand the importance of receiving a strong education and choosing a career that fits their interests and strengths, as well as their spending habits. We had amazing feedback from our students and have planned to offer the program again
at East Rockingham High School, as well as extend the program to Spotswood High School.
The software and program that we purchased with the funds from MillerCoors helped make the experience for our students even more realistic. Students were only eligible for positions based on the G.P.A (Grade Point Average). This connection between education and attainment was critical to the Reality Town experience.
Sustainability:
What long term positive changes are you able to implement with this event /funds: / In order to continue the program we are asking for financial assistance to pay for the students “Paychecks”. The paychecks are full of wonderful information that the students can use multiple times to expand on their knowledge of personal finance. The long-term goal of this project is for all high school students to participate in this hands on simulation. The program not only educates them on budgeting but it also empathizes the importance of higher education.
