Mathematics Curriculum Collaboration Meeting Notes
December 2, 2003
- Discussion of the Gates grant and the December 12 meeting.
- Jim Brady, Linda Bolte, Michael Gilbert are going to the meeting.
- Is retention the problem since many children finish high school math requirements by the end of 10th grade?
- CV requires 3 years of math – one year must be 11th or 12th year.
- EV requires 3 years of math – but last year must be in 11th or 12th year.
- Spokane is considering a new requirement in January 2004 which is 3 years to include a minimum of Integrated 2 (geometry along with right angle trigonometry).
- This group is definitely interested in being a demonstration site partnership.
- Gates grant need to pump up the item about aligning 11th, 12th, 13th curricula and the assessments techniques used by the community colleges (CC) and baccalaureate institutions (BI)
- There was a discussion of Intermediate Algebra
- Is it an entry requirement or an exit requirement for post-secondary?
- Now is looked at as an entrance requirement but for the many students placing into developmental math it is an exit requirement.
- A question was raised about the placement exams.
- EWU – test revised 3 years ago and it better reflects WASL type skills
- SCC – Primarily Asset
- SFCC Compass
- Asset – tremendous amount of algebraic manipulation
- Topics to Pursue
- Early Placement Test
- Cross crediting Precalculus
For example, collaboration on standards and topics and depth of topics for Precalculus which could lead to getting college credit for high school Precalculus
- Common curriculum
- Common assessments
- Classroom visitations
- College approval of instructor
- Collaboration among high school and college instructors
Can be extremely motivational for student
Would this cause a difficulty with BI’s general education quantitative reasoning requirement?
Take Precalculus II (or one more) at EWU and pass with at least a 2.0, then get credit for Precalculus I – assuming took a Precalculus in high school based on above discussions
Starting point is to first define the standards for Precalculus
- Issues at post-secondary
Incorporating new WASL standards into post-secondary curriculum. These students well prepared for Math 115 type courses
What can be done to improve success of those students who go into traditional Math Curriculum- Precalculus, Calculus, etc?
- 48% of Precalculus I students at SFCC fail
- Collaboration and determining what 11-13 curriculum should be regardless of high school or post-high school
- Two questions:
- What is intermediate algebra?
- EWU
- Community Colleges
- What is Precalculus?
- EWU
- Community Colleges
- High Schools
- Linda Bolte, to chair a committee to look atPrecalculus
- Committee is: Linda Bolte, EWU; Jim Brady, SFCC; Kelly Jahns, SCC; Valerie Kurtz, EVSD; Jerry Manfred, CVSD; and teachers yet to be named from Cheney, Spokane and WestValley school districts.
- Julie Peck will identify a teacher from SpokaneSchool District
- Ron Dalla will contact Cheney and WestValley districts for names of teachers to serve on this committee
- EWU – Algebra concepts (Math 196) 5 credits, 1 quarter college level course
- Next meeting for the group will be the last part of February, or the first part of March
