  1. Presentation - Steve Rigby, Leslie Little, Caryn Lawton,

Sustainabilityefforts in University Publications includes anationally recognized programand a departmental sustainability task force. The task force wants to interface with the university to help achieve broader sustainabilitygoals and to share their knowledge and experiences. Some of the sustainability accomplishments for University Publications are:

  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody certification
  • Digital printing technology
  • Reduction of energy consumption
  • Recycled-content paper
  • Recycling programs for printing and office paper waste
  • Reclaiming of film and printing plate materials
  • Lowest-emission photocopiers
  • Ozone-friendly inks and solvents
  • Compliance with all applicable environmental, health, and safety (EHS) requirements
  • Sustainability Task Force
  • Responsible office printing
  • Educational programs
  • Knowledge sharing and partnering

Steve also shared two signs, one promotes two sided printing and the other promotes energy conservation. Terry Ryan will work with Steve on the energy conservation sign. Dwight will ask Kathy Kok tolink the Sustainability Website to the University Publications Sustainability Website

University Publications is also working to provide sixteen mobile printing stationsfor students on campus, and ozone saving copiers

  1. Climate Commitment Update

Climate Action Plan - Marty O’Malley, Dwight Hagihara

Karl, Marty,Dr. Lovrich, and Dwight are working on the outline for the Climate Action Plan (CAP). They have reviewed other university plans. Dr. Lovrich, Dwight and Marty will work with Karl and provide a more complete outline and draft of the CAP at the September meeting. Dr. Lovrich suggested that Karl contact his colleague at Oregon State University who is working on their CAP.

The Climate Commitment deadline is the end of September. WSU will request a four monthextension to January 2010.

  1. ASSHE- Dwight

The membership dues paperwork will be ready once budget codes and signatory authorities are identified by the contributing departments.

6. Open Discussion -

August Meeting -Rich agreed to substitute for Dwight during the August 7th Meeting. A suggestion was made and vote taken to cancel the August meeting due to so many absences during that time. The next meeting will be September 4, 2009.

SHB2287 Legislation – Steve Rigby

Implementation of the Paper Use Reduction Program required by the House bill is still in process.

September 4th Meeting – Senator Chris Marr Presentation?

Dr. Lovrich will continue to work with Senator Marr.

January 2010 Meeting –

Sustainability and the Environment Committee Meeting –January meeting approved for January 15, 2010.
