Any incoming and outgoing mobility is managed by the International Office of the University comprising a staff of 25 person in total dealing with all incoming and outgoing students of the different international exchange activities including programs like Erasmus, Erasmus Mundus, DAAD exchange, PROMOS etc via a sound advisory- and management structure providing guidance, support and academic supervision to the students. The IO is supported by ERASMUS managers in each of the faculties as well as by non-profit voluntary associations helping students to get familiar with Germany, Berlin and HU.

a)  administrative support and responsible body:

All program students get a reasonably priced own studio/room, provided they apply themselves in time and according the rules.

c)  language courses:

HU´s modern language centre http://www.sprachenzentrum.hu-berlin.de offers regular and intensive courses according the needs of the students; available are preparatory intensive courses in German before the start of the semester as well as courses run concurrent to their studies; placement decisions and recommendations are based on the results of a language test that is part of the pre-arrival and registration procedures. All EMA 2students learning German have the opportunity for one free of charge intensive 4 weeks language course in German before the start of the semester plus accompanying language courses during the semester.

d)  support for visa/residence permit, etc:

Service functions, like the visa service, application for the residence permit in Berlin and advice on insurance matters are provided by AI in the International Club “Orbis Humboldtianus”. Students and scholars are given the opportunity to deal with International office AI advisors instead of the city/state Immigration Office. Passports and visa information as well as insurance matters are facilitated by the university.http://www.international.hu-berlin.de/an_die_hu/studierende/orbis/visaservice

e)  coaching and counselling:

Orbis Humboldtianus http://www.international.hu-berlin.de/orbis provides a permanent space to international students for meetings and discussions – it accommodates, among others, the international students association, the buddy programs “studis4studis” (students for students) arranging twinning of current, previous and future mobility students and scientists – and arranges orientation sessions, introductions to daily student life at HU and individual language tandems (Sprachbörse).

Additionally, international students may meet their study mates in the “Kustos” association www.kustos.hu-berlin.de, , which provides an intercultural and academic communication platform for international students, and offers courses and training for “freshers” (new international students) as well as to any students interested in International exchange and questions arround the stay abroad http://www.international.hu-berlin.de/an_die_hu/studierende/orbis/orientierung/interkulturelletrainings

i)  other services available:

AI provides any International student with a set of information material explaining all aspects of living and studying in Germany and at HU. Welcome meetings, a guided campus tour and the International students welcome party are most appreciated inaugural features at HU. Also, during the semester AI cares for the students by helping them to be fully involved in student life, the university sports program as well as by offering a cultural program to international students comprising excursions within Germany, to political institutions in Berlin, joint theatre attendance etc.

j)  other relevant information (e.g. services for disabled students/staff):

HU facilities are to a certain extent suitable for handicapped persons, i.e. there are elevators in main buildings, flat floor ground, ramps and special bathrooms. Due to its historic building substance case-by-case discussions are necessary if students with special needs come to HU. HU is no campus university; conditions vary widely according to which subject the student majors in. The university is, however, committed to providing every possible support to students with special needs.

k)  Social Network of EMA-2 students at HU http://emecwathuzuberlin.mixxt.de

As soon as EMA-2 students are selected for a fellowship at HU they are invited to join the ErasmusMundus social network at HU, which is restricted to EM grantees only. On this internet platform they find their study mates and predecessors before their arrival at Berlin and have the opportunity to communicate with each other and to ask for help and advise.
