WorkingWith Sections & Different Page NumberingIn Word

What You Need to Know First

  • Section breaks allow for different formatting per section. These types of breaks arenecessary if you intend to alter your page numbering throughout your document, but they can also wreak havoc if not used properly.
  • There are different types of breaks; page breaks and section breaks. The types we will be using for this documentation are located under Page Layout Tab Page Setup BoxBreaksSection Breaks. We will be using Next Page section breaks in our examples.
  • It matters where your cursor is when inserting section breaks. Be aware of this as you create them.
  • The way to see where section breaks are is by clicking on the paragraph mark (show/hide view): located in the Home tab in the paragraph box. However, you need not be in this view the entire time you are editing your document. You can turn it on/off as you need it by clicking back on the paragraph mark – it works as a toggle.
This is what a section break line looks like:

Print Layout view is recommended for working on your document in general.

  • Section breaks can be deleted by backspacing over them. It is easy to create multiple section breaks accidentally, sokeep an eye on them as you create them or this will drastically affect your page numbering.
  • You can identify what section you are in by looking at the lower left hand corner of your Word Window.

If you don’t see sections in this area, right-click the gray status bar at the bottom of your window and select section near the top so it becomes viewable.

  • One of the most important things to remember when creating section breaks and associated page numbers is knowing about Link to Previous in the Header and Footer tools. This will be explained later, but forgetting to use it can cause problems with your page numbering working properly.

NOTE: This menu only appears when you are creating page numbering and footers.
