Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes
Students will be about to use various shapes to construct tessellations. In these tessellations, students will learn about tilling and patterning.
Targeted State Frameworks/Content Standards/Benchmarks
CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.2Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them.
Procedures
Creating your own shape:
1.  Take a 3x5 index card.
2.  Cut from the top and place it in the same location at the bottom of the card. Tape it down.
3.  Cut from the left and place it in the same location at the right of the card. Tape it down.
Using your shape to make a tessellation:
1.  Take a sheet of white paper.
2.  Trace the shape anyway on the paper.
3.  Trace another shape to it. Do not leave spaces. Make sure both shapes are connected.
4.  Continue tracing until the entire paper is filled.
Approximate Time Needed (Example: 45 minutes, 4 hours, 1 year, etc.)
45 minutes
Prerequisite Skills

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
Resource Student / Shapes are already drawn. Students will be able to pick which shape they would like to tessellate.
Gifted Student / Students will create their shapes to tessellate.
Student Assessment
Teachers will check to see how students created patterns with their shapes. They will also check for no spacing between shapes.
