NOTICE 1
Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill - House of Lords
This bill will begin its Report Stage in the House of Lords of Tuesday 15th January. It is vital to write immediately to Peers urging them to support the following amendments:
1The establishment of umbilical-cord-blood banks throughout the country. Worldwide there are 8000 life saving umbilical-cord-blood transplants of which on 1% are in the UK. This is because 98% of cord-blood in this country is routinely destroyed whereas in other countries most of it is saved with parental permission.
2To ban ‘saviour siblings’ – the creation of brothers/sisters who would genetically match a sibling who has a genetic disease or other abnormality. Until now ‘donors’ have always been voluntary. With “saviour siblings” there is nothing voluntary. The parents give consent for the child to be created so that his/her organs or tissues may be used to treat his/her sibling.
3Urge Peers to vote against the creation of human or hybrid clones which has cost millions in research. It has so far proved futile and has provided not one treatment. There are now many alternatives available using adult stem cells [which is ethical]. Urge Peers to vote for ‘the Hunt Amendment’ which would require ‘all license applicants to demonstrate that no alternatives exist to the use of human or hybrid clones’.
4To vote against the deletion of the word ‘father’ from the Bill. (See below EDM 162)
5To urge Peers to vote for the creation of a properly representative and balanced National Ethics Committee to replace the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Committee which consists only of members supporting the use of the human embryo as a guinea pig.
NOTICE 2
Early Day Motion (EDM) 162 denying IVF children the legal right to a father.
The present law requires IVF practitioners to recognise a child’s ‘need of a father’. However, the new Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill has deleted the word ‘father’ and replaced it with the term ‘two parents’. This obviously is to accommodate ‘same-sex couples’. We are not ‘gat-bashing’. The new Bill ignores the fact that mothers and fathers are not interchangeable and also ignores the wealth of information and knowledge we have on the contribution a father provides to a child’s upbringing. It will create a new class of citizen/child – one who has been deprived of the legal right to a father who is male. It is vital for as many as possible to write to their M.P.’s demanding that the word ‘father’ remain in the law.
NOTICE 3
Personal meetings with M.P.’s to lobby them on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill
In addition to writing letters it is vital that an informed group meet with the local Members of parliament to lobby him or her on this Bill. Briefing packs on human embryo research and cloning are available from Right to Life.
