Introduction

Here is an inventory of newspapers from the West Indies and Bermuda printed before 1877 in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society. In the American Antiquarian SocietyProceedings for April 1926, Waldo Lincoln (President of AAS 1907-1927) published a “List of Newspapers of the West Indies and Bermuda in the Library of the American Antiquarian Society”, pp. 130-155. He noted that most of the collection had been acquired in the past fifteen years. Most of them were acquired by Mr. Lincoln during his travels in the Caribbean and Bermuda where he purchased whatever files he could find. Since then the collection has been augmented by small files and individual issues, but nothing like the vast quantities Mr. Lincoln accumulated.

This revised inventory of the AAS holdings takes into account new additions to the collection and lists all issues separately. The holdings are based on going through the entire collection issue by issue. Very little was assumed. Names were recorded when publisher, editor, printer, or proprietor information was given. It was decided to list volume and issue numbers. All attempts were made to transcribe titles and punctuation when possible. Mistakes in numbering of issues and dates were often made on the original newspaper, and this shows how difficult (if not impossible) to work backwards when trying to determine when a newspaper began. All supplements, postscripts, and extras are listed separately from the regular issue to note they exist.

Note: AAS used to have Caribbean and Bermuda newspapers after 1876. In 1993 these were transferred to the University of Connecticut at Storrs along with almost all of our Latin American serials.
