SECTION 321316 - DECORATIVE CONCRETE PAVING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.5  ACTION SUBMITTALS

1.6  INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

1.7  QUALITY ASSURANCE

Retain "Installer Qualifications" Paragraph below if requirements in Section014000 "Quality Requirements" are insufficient. Verify that manufacturers provide training and approval. Revise if installers are qualified by other means.

  1. Installer Qualifications: An employer of workers trained and approved by manufacturer of decorative concrete paving systems.
  2. Ready-Mix-Concrete Manufacturer Qualifications: A firm experienced in manufacturing ready-mixed concrete products and that complies with ASTMC94/C94M requirements for production facilities and equipment.

Retain subparagraph below if required.

  1. Manufacturer certified according to NRMCA's "Certification of Ready Mixed Concrete Production Facilities" (Quality Control Manual - Section3, "Plant Certification Checklist").

Retain "Testing Agency Qualifications" Paragraph below if Contractor or manufacturer selects testing agency or if Contractor is required to provide services of a qualified testing agency in "Field Quality Control" Article. Qualification requirements are in addition to those specified in Section014000 "Quality Requirements."

  1. Testing Agency Qualifications: Qualified according to ASTMC1077 and ASTME329 for testing indicated.

Retain subparagraph below, which is required by ACI301 (ACI301M) and ASTMC31/C31M. ASTMC1077 notes that relevant field or laboratory technician certification by ACI, NRMCA, the Portland Cement Association (PCA), or the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies may demonstrate evidence of competence.

  1. Personnel conducting field tests shall be qualified as ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician, Grade1, according to ACICP-1 or an equivalent certification program.
  2. Mockups: Build mockups to verify selections made under Sample submittals and to demonstrate aesthetic effects and set quality standards for materials and execution.
  3. Build mockups of full-thickness sections of decorative concrete paving to demonstrate typical joints; surface color, pattern, and texture; curing; and standard of workmanship.
  4. Build mockups of decorative concrete paving in the location and of the size indicated or, if not indicated, build mockups where directed by Architect and not less than [96 inches (2400 mm) by 96 inches (2400 mm)] <Insert dimensions>.

Retain first subparagraph below if mockups are not only for establishing appearance factors.

  1. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract Documents contained in mockups unless Architect specifically approves such deviations in writing.

Retain subparagraph below if the intention is to make an exception to the default requirement in Section014000 "Quality Requirements" for demolishing and removing mockups.

  1. Subject to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.

1.8  PRECONSTRUCTION TESTING

  1. Preconstruction Testing Service: Engage a qualified independent testing agency to perform preconstruction testing on decorative concrete paving mixtures.

1.9  FIELD CONDITIONS

  1. Traffic Control: Maintain access for vehicular and pedestrian traffic as required for other construction activities.
  2. Cold-Weather Concrete Placement: Protect concrete work from physical damage or reduced strength that could be caused by frost, freezing, or low temperatures. Comply with ACI306.1 and the following:
  3. When air temperature has fallen to or is expected to fall below 40 degF (4.4 degC), uniformly heat water and aggregates before mixing to obtain a concrete mixture temperature of not less than 50 degF (10 degC) and not more than 80 degF (27 degC) at point of placement.
  4. Do not use frozen materials or materials containing ice or snow.
  5. Do not use calcium chloride, salt, or other materials containing antifreeze agents or chemical accelerators unless otherwise specified and approved in design mixtures.
  6. Hot-Weather Concrete Placement: Comply with ACI301 (ACI301M) and as follows when hot-weather conditions exist:
  7. Cool ingredients before mixing to maintain concrete temperature below 90 degF (32 degC) at time of placement. Chilled mixing water or chopped ice may be used to control temperature, provided water equivalent of ice is calculated in total amount of mixing water. Using liquid nitrogen to cool concrete is Contractor's option.
  8. Cover steel reinforcement with water-soaked burlap, so steel temperature will not exceed ambient air temperature immediately before embedding in concrete.

Retain last subparagraph above and option in subparagraph below if steel reinforcement is required.

  1. Fog-spray forms[,steel reinforcement,] and subgrade just before placing concrete. Keep subgrade moisture uniform without standing water, soft spots, or dry areas.

Some manufacturers' products may require higher temperatures for proper curing. Consult manufacturers and revise first paragraph below to suit requirements for specific products if necessary.

  1. Apply coatings only when temperature of surfaces to be coated and ambient air temperatures are between 50 and 95 degF (10 and 35 degC).
  2. Do not apply coatings when relative humidity exceeds 85 percent; at temperatures less than 5 degF (3 degC) above the dew point; or to damp or wet surfaces.
  3. Do not apply exterior coatings in snow, rain, fog, or mist.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

Manufacturers and products listed in SpecAgent and MasterWorks Paragraph Builder are neither recommended nor endorsed by the AIA or Avitru. Before inserting names, verify that manufacturers and products listed there comply with requirements retained or revised in descriptions and are both available and suitable for the intended applications. For definitions of terms and requirements for Contractor's product selection, see Section016000 "Product Requirements."

2.1  CONCRETE, GENERAL

  1. ACI Publications: Comply with ACI301 (ACI301M) unless otherwise indicated.

2.2  FORMS

  1. Form Materials: Plywood, metal, metal-framed plywood, or other approved panel-type materials to provide full-depth, continuous, straight, and smooth exposed surfaces.
  2. Use flexible or uniformly curved forms for curves of a radius of 100 feet (30.5m) or less. [Do not use notched and bent forms.]

Retain "Forms for Textured Finish Concrete" Paragraph below if adding texture to vertical surfaces, such as stair risers, with form liners rather than stamps. Insert details of selected form liner.

  1. Forms for Textured Finish Concrete: Units of face design, size, arrangement, and configuration indicated. Provide solid backing and form supports to ensure stability of textured form liners.
  2. Form-Release Agent: Commercially formulated form-release agent that will not bond with, stain, or adversely affect concrete surfaces and that will not impair subsequent treatments of concrete surfaces.

2.3  STEEL REINFORCEMENT

Retain this article if steel reinforcement is required; revise to suit Project. Insert requirements for zinc-coated (galvanized) or epoxy-coated reinforcement if required.

Retain "Recycled Content of Steel Products" Paragraph below to specify recycled content if required. An alternative method of requiring recycled content is to retain requirement in Project's Division01 sustainable design requirements Section that gives Contractor the option and responsibility to determine how recycled content requirements will be met.

  1. Recycled Content of Steel Products: Postconsumer recycled content plus one-half of preconsumer recycled content not less than [25] [60] <Insert value> percent.
  2. Plain-Steel Welded-Wire Reinforcement: ASTMA1064/A1064M, fabricated from as-drawn steel wire into flat sheets.
  3. Reinforcing Bars: ASTMA615/A615M, Grade60 (Grade420); deformed.
  4. Steel Bar Mats: ASTMA184/A184M; with ASTMA615/A615M, Grade60 (Grade420) deformed bars; assembled with clips.
  5. Plain-Steel Wire: ASTMA1064/A1064M, as drawn.

Plastic-surfaced or reinforced-paper-covered dowels are available from proprietary sources. Indicate joint dowel lengths on Drawings.

  1. Joint Dowel Bars: ASTMA615/A615M, Grade60 (Grade420) plain-steel bars. Cut bars true to length with ends square and free of burrs.
  2. Bar Supports: Bolsters, chairs, spacers, and other devices for spacing, supporting, and fastening reinforcing bars, welded-wire reinforcement, and dowels in place. Manufacture bar supports according to CRSI's "Manual of Standard Practice" from steel wire, plastic, or precast concrete of greater compressive strength than concrete specified, and as follows:

  1. Equip wire bar supports with sand plates or horizontal runners where base material will not support chair legs.
