Dear Friends and Supporters,

On May 11th & 12th, 2017 the Austin Child Guidance Center is convening the second Cross-Discipline Trauma Conference of Central Texas at the AT&T Conference Center. This is a regional training conference on trauma and trauma-informed care. The two day conference brings together over 650 professionals and organizations in Central Texas that work with children and young adults; including mental health clinicians, physicians, school personnel, medical/nursing professionals, law enforcement, juvenile justice professionals, and occupational/physical therapists. The conference will provide expert guidance, education and continuing education units on the effects of trauma, as well as evidence-based practices in recognizing and treating trauma. The first Cross-Discipline Trauma Conference was sold out in 2015.

Keynote speaker Dr. Dan Siegel is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine where he is on the faculty of the Center for Culture, Brain, and Development and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center. He is an award-winning educator and author of numerous articles and books in the field of interpersonal neurobiology. Breakout sessions will take place the second day of the conference and cover topics including best practices and interventions that can be utilized by a variety of different disciplines.

Research indicates that there is a direct link between mental health and a child’s overall physical health. A child’s mental well-being is intrinsically connected to his or her life outcomes. Moreover, the consequences of untreated trauma can have long-term impacts for individuals and communities. Untreated child trauma survivors have higher absentee rates at school, are more likely to have long-term physical health problems, are retained in school more often, and are more likely to be arrested before graduating from high school. Early identification and treatment of trauma is paramount for improving the quality of life for the children and families in the Central Texas area.

For over 65 years the Austin Child Guidance Center has provided quality mental health services to underserved children and families. The agency is a respected training resource and a local leader in Trauma-Informed Care. This Seminar will further the agency’s mission in improving the mental health of children. We are pleased to announce that our Title Sponsor for the conference is St. David’s Foundation. We invite you to join us as an official sponsor of this prestigious event. We hope that you will consider becoming a sponsor, and join us in making a profound change in the lives of children and families.

Sincerely,

Russell Smith, LMSW
