Dear Parents:

In 8th grade LA/SS, we are exploring the Women’s Rights Movement in United States during the mid 1800’s, which correlates with our Reform Unit. We believe that the movie “Iron Jawed Angels” best represents women’s struggles for suffrage and would add depth to the learning experience. Due to the movie’s length and some graphic content, we are unable to show the movie in class. To give students the opportunity to see this great film, we will hold a viewing of the movie in the CSA auditorium on Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:00 p.m. Attendance is optional and no grades or assessments are connected to this movie.

Iron Jawed Angels recounts for a contemporary audience a key chapter in U.S. history, the struggle of suffragists who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment. Focusing on two defiant women, Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor), the film shows how these activists broke from the mainstream women's-rights movement and created a more radical wing, daring to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women's voting rights in 1920.

The movie was produced by HBO, and while it is not rated, does contain mature language, content, and themes. Despite the mature nature, we feel the message and learning opportunities are very strong. Please feel free to contact us if you have any specific questions about the content.

Students must have this form signed, as well as a designated adult to accompany them throughout the movie and to provide transportation home. One adult can be responsible for multiple students, as long as we have a permission slip from each parent designating the adult responsible for their student.
