Introduction
We are delighted that you have chosen to participate within the The Telford Tinman Triathlon. The original Tinman event was first held in Madeley in 1986and was one of the very first Triathlons in the UK. The event has been recreated with a new base - at Wrekin College, Wellington and seeks to encourage new triathletes with our new super sprint format... and those more experienced alike... with our traditional sprint distance.
We aim to continue with the very welcoming, friendly and supportive atmosphere the original event had and look forward to some fabulous racing on the day!
Location & Parking
The location for registration and parking is Wrekin College, Stanley Road, Wellington, Telford Shropshire TF1 3BH, there is plenty of free parking at Old Hall School and access to registration and the sports centre is from this car park. PLEASE NOTE THE BUILDING WILL NOT OPEN UNTIL 7.30AM.
Please take care on the day when approaching this area and use the directions below, all other routes in and around Wrekin College on the day will be used as part of the bike course and therefore it is imperative for the athlete’s safety and the successful running of the event that these routes are keep clear of traffic. Parking will be clearly sign posted and well marshalled.
Travel Directions
Leave the M54 at Junction 6, follow signs for Whitchurch. Pass over the 1st roundabout (Wrekin Retail Park). At the next roundabout turn left onto B5061 (Watling Street) and pass through 2 sets of traffic lights. At the 3rd set of lights turn right onto Mill Bank and then right onto King Street, continue along king street taking the 2nd right and immediately turn right onto waterloo Road. Continue along Waterloo Road where you find access to Old Hall Car Park, registration and transition.
Registration
Registration and transition open from 7.30am and will remain open until 10.30am. All competitors must register on arrival. Registration is located inside the sports centre- it will be signed from the main entrance. Here your start time will be confirmed and your race numbers for you to wear during the race, which will include a number for your bike and helmet (timing chips will be issued on poolside). BTF members will need to show their race licence (or pay an additional £3) Non BTF members will have already paid for a day member’s licence (cost is included in your race entry fee). If you are currently taking any medication or suffer from any specific medical condition please inform the registration crew and clearly write any relevant details on the back of your race numbers. If you feel ill on the day please don’t race.
Changing Facilities
There are changing facilities and showers inside the sports centre and toilets are located within the swimming pool changing area, opposite reception and on the upper floor of the sports centre.
Race Briefing
All race information will be on display in the registration areawhere all relevant information concerning the day will be displayed. It is your responsibility to read this, any amendments to the race schedule/route and clarification of any compulsory stops on course will be clearly detailed. There will be specific race briefings on poolside prior to your start time. All competitors are expected to arrive on poolside in good time at least 20 minutes prior to their start time.
Bike Racking
Once you have registered go to the transition area and bike racking which will be situated at the rear of the swimming pool on the adjacent Astroturf. Please familiarise yourself with the entrance and exits to poolside, transition and exits for both the bike and run course, together with the dismount line and finish line. If you are unsure please ask one of the event team. All bikes must be racked between 7.30am-9.30am on the Sunday. Entrance can only be gained to transition with your race number. Your bike must have a sticker with your race number on, which will be issued to you and you must wear your helmet, properly fastened. Only competitors with race numbers will be allowed into transition to collect bikes after the event, which must be shown when leaving the transition area. Please rack your bike according to your race number and remove any kit bags, which are not needed. You will not be able to collect your bike until after the last wave of runners has passed through transition.
Start Times
The event starts at 8.30am with the super sprint triathlon race. The sprint event will commence immediately following this (approx. 8.45am). You will be sent your start time prior to race day – but please check for final changes on your arrival. You must be on poolside 20 minutes before your start time for a final briefing.
Timing
Your timing chip must be worn at all times, fastened securely around your left ankle using the Velcro strap, in the event you lose your chip please call out your number out at the finish line. Please do not lose your timing chip or you will be asked to pay for it at a cost of £35. You must hand it your timing chip before leaving the finish line in exchange for your medal.
Numbers
You must wear your race numbers at all times on the bike route and run course. Your number must be worn on your front during the run (if using a race belt) and on the back on the bike. Your number must not be cut down or folded in anyway and clearly visible to the marshals and race referee.
Swim
400m (16 lengths),DEEP WATER ENTRY/EXIT. Please arrive 20 minutes before your start time as stated above for a pool siderace briefing. The swim will take place within Wrekin College’s pool; you will be expected to count your own lengths however there will be someone checking you count them correctly. Please be aware of lane direction prior to entering the water. The starter will ask you to enter the water (no diving allowed) and then give you a countdown to start. You will only start on the instruction of the starter. The lane counter will help keep count and will put a float in the water when you have 2 lengths remaining. IMPORTANT: the lane counters decision is final; any argument will result in a penalty. Do report any discrepancies to the race referee or race director as soon as possible after the race. If you need any assistance entering/exiting the water please let your lane counter know in good time.
Transition
The transition area is located at the rear of the swimming pool on the schools Astroturf. Exit the pool taking care as there is a step down- a marshal will be there to remind you. There will be no running on poolside. Follow the marked course route through the rear gate to transition. Exit transition and onto the bike mount line.
Bike
20km- The roads are open to traffic so please take care. This is the link to the sprint distance bike course:
The bike course will be marshalled and clearly sign posted however you will be expected to adhere to the Highway Code at all times. Due to the location of Wrekin College there are a number of right hand turns on the course, one at0.85KM at the bottom of Albert Road onto King Street. This will be a compulsory foot down, without exception. There will be a marshal checking you do this, any competitor not seen to take the correct precautions may result in disqualification. On returning to Wrekin College at 19.91KM there is a sharp left hand turn onto Leegomery road, please take care to adhere to all signs and marshal instructions. The dismount line will be clearly marked on the approach to transition along Stanley Road.
Run
5km- Exit transition through the rear gate of the Astroturf and onto the run,which is a flat grass routewith five 1km loops around the fields behind the sports centre (see map). The course is entirely on grass and will be marshalled and signed.You will need to collect 4 bands before you are allowed onto the finishing straight.
Finish
The finishing line is on the field next to the “race hub” on your final lap you need to enter the finishing shoot towards the finish line; this will be an ideal area for spectators to cheer you on.
Presentation and Results
Please exchange your timing chip for your well-deserved finisher’s medal. Prizes giving will take place at around 11.30am or 15 minutes after the last finisher and will take place in the sports hall.
Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd 3rd male and female. Results will be displayed on screen throughout the morning and prize giving, then displayed on the club website and on who are our official timekeepers for the event.
Event
The Telford Tinman Triathlon is organised and co-ordinated by Wrekin College Triathlon club and is sanctioned by the British Triathlon Federation, as such, it is governed by their rules and regulations, details of which are available from .
Refreshments
Food and drink will be on sale inside the sports centre throughout the race.
Spectators
The main activities will be centred around the swim start/finish, bike start/finish, transition, lapped run and finish line shoot. There are seats available along poolside and the run course is spectator friendly. NB. Spectators must stay off the course at all times and not obstruct competitors or race officials. Spectators are asked not to take their cars onto the bike course. It is important that spectator traffic is not generated both for the safety of the competitors, to minimises disruption to other road users and local residents. Any vehicle attending or following any rider may result in that rider being disqualified.
