Hey CTE teachers,

I sent out an e-mail asking for help and I didn't get a lot of responses, but the ones I got were great ideas. Thanks for everyone who sent me your ideas. So many people asked if I would forward what I got to them so I just decided to send it out to everyone along with some attachments that go with the ideas. Enjoy!

I found a great source for Ag lessons on their

website www.agclassroom.org/ut. They did a presentation on

some of the lessons last conference. I have used the

lesson Source Search. It is pretty fun.The site gives you

everything you need. I also use the video "Connecting to

Agriculture". I think you can order it from that site.

Some of our fabric lessons and food safety and sanition

lessons count for ag. If you go to the usoe website and

check out the virtual tours there is one I like for food

safety, call "food safety and sanition". It covers

everything and I made up a simple worksheet for it and the

kids have a computer lab day and answer the questions.

We only need 1-4 days on Independent Living. At this

past conference there was a lesson on learning styles or

personality types that was very good. It should be on the

FACS website with all the other conferenc materials. I

plan on trying it. I usually do a lesson on communication

and I read the story

"The Water Closet" The kids love it. It can be found on

the FACS website in the lesson plans, I think. I found it

in an old cirricullum guide book. I have also used the

lesson, Red light, Green Light. Also, I have called the

Family Support and Treatment Center and they have a person

that comes out and does a great lesson the stress

reduction. I do it every year and have her come for 3 days

and do the other CTE classes and it counts as a work based

learning day.

For my agriculture unit, I teach biotechnology by making cottage cheese (using a crock pot) and while it's cooking, show the biotechnology downloaded from ag in the classroom. Ag in the classroom has great ideas for CTE teachers. Hope this helps!

For problem solving I split students into groups of 4 and have them solve a murder mystery. They are given all the clues but have to figure out when, where, by whom etc. I have attached the sheets I have used to implement the activity. I usually set a time limit otherwise they go on forever!

Afterwards it's important to de-brief. Start a discussion by asking various questions...dis they solve the problem, what method they used to solve the problem, if certain people took over the leadership decisions, etc.

Good luck,

Vivien

I attached an agriculture assignment that has the kids get on the internet. It's easy, and the kids enjoy the different activities. I would love to hear what ideas you get on problem solving and social skills. They are such serious subjects that I have a hard time making them interesting.

Thanks,

We talk about social skills and then I have them pair up and draw a picture puzzle ( a sentence out of pictures) that has to do with good social skills or good manners. They seem to enjoy this. The next day they show them to the class and guess what each others sentence is.
