TMTA Proposed Service Changes Fact Sheet, October 2010

Service changes under consideration by TMTA (To be voted on by the TMTA Board, 10/18/10)

  • Scenario 1: Evening service. Eliminates the least productive fixed route trips, the noontime downtown circulator service and the evening service. However, it would add evening trips to routes 1, 5, 10, 11 and 12. Would save approx. $225K.
  • The “least productive fixed route trips” on the fixed route that will be eliminated are primarily at the end of the day (after 5pm).
  • Evening fixed route trips would cover most of the service area, but would travel in one direction only and the service would end earlier that the current evening service (9:15 or 10:15 depending on the route).
  • ADA Complementary Paratransit Services (The LIFT) would operate during the same hours as the new evening fixed routes.
  • Scenario 2: Sunday service. Eliminats the least productive fixed route trips, the noontime downtown circulator service and Sunday service. Adds Sunday trips to routes 2-12. Would save approx. $225K.
  • Similar to Scenario #1, except that it retains the current evening service, but replaces the current Sunday service by extending fixed route service operations to Sunday. The Sunday fixed routes would cover the entire service area with the exception of the Oakland/North Topeka area (Route #1).
  • ADA Complementary Paratransit Services (The LIFT) would operate during the same hours as the new Sunday fixed routes.
  • Scenario 3: Trip elimination. Eliminates the least productive fixed route trips. Adds 6:15 p.m. trips to routes 1, 5, 10, 11 and 12. Would save approx. $500K.
  • This scenario retains the current evening and Sunday services and extends some fixed route service to cover the current gap in service. The new “evening” fixed routes would travel in one direction and cover the entire service area.
  • Advantage: Because this scenario saves more than twice the money needed it gives TMTA “wiggle room” to restore some of the fixed routes services if demand warrants it. It also saves enough money that it reduces the likelihood of any additional major change to services in the near future.
  • Disadvantage: The trips that would be eliminated in this scenario would translate to about 135 lost rides per day.
  • Scenario 4: Eliminate all evening and Sunday service.Would save approx. $150K.
  • This would eliminate ALL evening and Sunday bus services and may require additional budget cuts to cover the $200,000 that TMTA did not receive in their budget request from the City Council.Note: Once these services are lost they will likely be very difficult to restore.
  • Scenario 5:Trolley Money(Currently not being considered by TMTA) Use the $160K they will get from the transfer of 5 trolleys to Wichita public transit to cover the expected budget shortfall.
  • This would be a one-time fix and would require TMTA to secure additional funding in next year’s budget.
