Chairmans’ Report - Dean Davis

·  Dean discussed AIAA T-shirts, and suggested the need for a “logo” for the Los Angeles section. The “logo” would be a nice advertisement for the L.A. section. Guido mentioned a previous “logo” which incorporated a picture of the Wright Flyer.

·  Dean reminded everyone the Responsive Space Conference was 8-11 March.

·  Dean said volunteers, under the Give a Day, Get a day program, had to register on the AIAA website.

·  Dean mentioned the upcoming Congressional Visits Day, 17-18 March.

Treasurer -Chuck Kilmer

·  The treasury currently has $20,565.89 in its checking account.

·  A check was written for $40.88 for council dinners.

Precollege Outreach - Colin McCaughey

·  3 March, Wednesday, Dana Middle School Science Fair (judging?)

·  11 March, Thursday, Virgil Middle School. ? (Apparently this school has a large percentage of children at or below the poverty level.)

·  17 March, Wednesday, Hollenbeck Middle School Science Fair.

·  20 March, Saturday, El Segundo Stargazing Party

·  24 March, Wiseburn School District star party (rescheduled due to inclement weather in February).

·  25 March, Palos Verdes Peninsula Science & Engineering Fair

·  There is a K12 El Segundo school event for which a Boeing person and a retired person have volunteered.

Responsive Space - Rich Van Allen

·  RS-8 attendance is less than previous years at this time, apparently because a group of about fifty is working on a proposal. Otherwise plans are going well.

Programs - Rich Van Allen

·  The dinner meeting will be held on, Wednesday, 24 March at the Manhattan Beach Marriott.

Mr. John Garvey is the speaker. He will talk about the derivatives market and related subjects.

·  The April meeting topic is planned to be about high speed trains.

Aerospace Alumni - Bob Brodsky

·  Bob reported the Alumni group had been looking at historic pictures including some old “Movie Tone News” pictures.

National Space Society/AIAA Partnership - Seth Potter

·  Two meetings are scheduled; one in Chicago 27-31 May, and another to be scheduled in Orlando later in the year.

·  One registration fee pays for both conferences.

Miscellaneous

·  There are two events coming in April. One is the anniversary of the Apollo 13 flight, and the other is the anniversary of the Yuri Gagarin flight. A motion was made & seconded for the Los Angeles Section of the AIAA to sponsor an Apollo 13 celebration event up to a maximum of $1000.

·  It was mentioned that the AIAA no longer has a Congressional Fellows program because that would be a conflict of interest because of the lobbyists employed by the AIAA.

·  The Orange County Aerospace Systems & Technology conference will be held Saturday, 1 May. A call for papers has just been issued.

·  Dick Denison said the “My Aerospace History” could use help. He questioned how to get material from sources other than North American. Inputs are needed from Northrop, Grumman, Douglas, Ryan, etc. The Aero Club of Southern California was mentioned.

·  The SpaceUp “Un-Conference”, 27-28 February at the Space Museum in San Diego was attended by Eric Gever & Dale Jensen. Eric was a volunteer for the event, and Dale gave an “Ignite” talk which allowed 20 slides to be presented in 15 minutes. The conference had an eclectic mix of people who are space afficianados, but many of those seem interested in going into space, but seem less interested in how they get into space.

·  The Secretary questioned if sending copies of the Section minutes to the Region VI director, (Bruce Wilson, Boeing) and to headquarters would be a good idea.

Next Meeting; Tuesday 13 April.

Meeting adjourned at approximately 7:23 p.m.

Dale Lawrence Jensen, P.E., Secretary
