4th9 Weeks Syllabus

Unit Objectives:

--develop writing style with particular focus on writing for the AP test

--increase use of sentence variety

-- Discuss writing process and strategies.

--Develop an accurate and appropriate thesis and organizational skills

--Identify and address weaknesses in writing

--Recognize the various literary approaches to a text.

--Understand the tenants of existentialism.

--Analyze a text, prose and poetry, by implementing literary strategies

--Engage in various strategies in preparation for the AP Literature and Composition Test

--Engage in discussions exploring Heart of Darkness, Brave New World, and The Stranger

March 20-24

Mon: Multiple Choice Practice; discussion of novel; checkout The Stranger

Tues: Reading Check (Books 2-3)—formative;Multiple Choice practice

Wed/Thurs: Timed Writing—prose selections from H of D (summative); students write two essays and select one for the summative grade HW: Start reading The Stranger

Fri: Free-write #9 ; discuss Heart of Darkness

March 27-31

Mon: Notes on The Stranger; Read “The Myth of Sisyphus”

Tues: Notes on The Stranger and Existential Philosophy;

Wed/Thurs: Writing Workshop: Intro and TWO body paragraphs (Two copies are required; if you are absent, you must email the work before 3 pm to avoid a late penalty. ***Journal Check 7-9. No late work

Fri: Reading Check #1, Part 1, “The Myth of Siyphus” and notes (formative); Free-write #10

April 3-7Saturday, APRIL 8th is the day of the mock test in room 2603. You must check in before 8 am as the test begins at 8 am sharp!

Mon:Meet in library! We will spend the day working on our research essays

Tues: Reading Check, Part 2 (formative); discussion of novel

Wed/Thurs: Peer Review/Self-Review of Research Paper (formative); Every student is required to bring 2 copies of his/her complete essay WITH works cited for peer review.

Fri: Free-write #11 ; continue discussion of novel Research papers submitted by 3pm today ( turnitin AND hard copy) will receive +5 on the final grade!!! HW: Start reading Brave New World

April 10-14

Mon: Multiple choice practice; Continue discussion of the novel.

Tues: Research paper due!! (summative)All essays must be submitted by 7:15 am to turnitin.com. All hard copies must be submitted in class with all required materials in a large manila envelope. Campus late policy will apply! Review for test

Wed/Thurs: The Stranger Test (summative) ; reading time for Brave New World

Tutoring: room 2602, Tues/Thurs 2:50-3:30; other times by appointment only.

Make-ups: If you need to make up a quiz or test, please see me and we will work out a time. Students have one week to make up a test or quiz.

Absences: If you are going to be absent, the courteous thing to do is to let me know. If you are out for an extended time, please email me to make arrangements to get any work you have missed. In addition, please check my website for handouts/notes/announcements. Personal responsibility and organization is KEY to success in this and any other course. It is your responsibility to keep up with the syllabus. You are held accountable for all quizzes, tests, and coursework EVEN if you missed the previous class. Again, contacting me when you are absent will help you stay on track.

Grading Policy: 75% summative

25% formative

AP/Dual Credit courses do not allow for retesting on either formative or summative assessments.
