Elementary Science Education: Assistant Professor, tenure-eligible. The Department of Reading and Elementary Education invites applications for a tenure-eligible position beginning August 15, 2014, to contribute to undergraduate and graduate programs in elementary education with an emphasis on science education at the elementary school level in urban contexts.

We seek a faculty colleague to join a high achieving, dynamic, and collaborative College of Education. Ourteacher candidates are expected to meet the increasing demands of a highly diverse elementary school population. We seek faculty colleagues with diverse backgrounds and experiences who can add to the level of preparation of our graduates to teach successfully in our rapidly changing society. It is our goal to prepare professionals who will contribute to the positive development of all persons, and to foster the development of effective schools for all children and youth. The Position and the Responsibilities:The successful candidate will teach K-6 science education methods courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels; advise master’s and doctoral students; develop and maintain an active research program in science education; participate on department, college and university committees; and maintain school partnerships.

Qualifications: An earned doctorate in science education, elementary education, or curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in science or a closely related field by the appointment date; minimum three years K-12 science classroom teaching experience (preference will be given to teaching experiences in an urban context); eligibility for North Carolina Teacher licensure; demonstrated potential for success in college teaching and contributing to academic program development at the undergraduate and graduate levels; demonstrated potential for research productivity; a research agenda related to science education in the urban elementary school; knowledge of STEM initiatives and development of STEM programs; knowledge of national trends in science education including but not limited to the Next Generation Science Standards; demonstrated ability to work in partnerships with elementary schools in urban and other settings; excellent oral and written communication skills; and ability/interest in using technology in the classroom.Preference will be given to candidates who can work collaboratively across disciplines; commit to improving urban education through research, community engagement, and practice; and demonstrate ability to build relationships in urban communities.
