Edo Competition-tuned Porsche sets speed record on new SportContact 6
· Tuned Porsche Turbo 911 S from Edo Competition clocks 341 km/h in Papenburg on high-tech series-production tires from Continental
· Stock SportContact 6 tires from Continental approved for speeds of up to 350 km/h
Hanover, December 2, 2015. On October 23 at the Papenburg proving grounds, high-tech tuning company Edo Competition set a new speed record in a Porsche Turbo 911 S. Company owner Edo Karabegovic powered the Porsche on its new series-production SportContact 6 tires round the 12.3-kilometer high-speed oval at 341 km/h. The record run was preceded by roughly 12 months’ development work, as the engine output was upped from the standard specification 560 PS (412 kW) to a mighty 672 PS (494 kW). In pursuit of the record, the car’s special ultralight rims were fitted with SportContact 6 high-tech tires, only launched at the end of August, with 245/35 ZR 20 rubber at the front and 325/25 ZR 21 at the rear. Edo Competition had equipped the Porsche Turbo 911 S with new, resized turbochargers, sports intercoolers, a modified intake and a sports exhaust, and had optimized the engine and transmission management software. The outcome was a car that covered the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 2.7 seconds – half a second faster than the stock model.
The new high-tech SportContact 6 tire from Continental came onto the market in the summer of 2015. Compared to its predecessor, this super sports tire from Continental boasts substantial improvements, mainly in terms of handling, steering precision and high-speed performance. To put this tire’s superior capabilities onto the road – improvements of up to 14 percent in some respects compared to its predecessor – Continental’s development engineers virtually reinvented the chemical composition of the tread strip, as well as the tread pattern and the tire construction. There are currently 41 sizes available for 19 to 23 inch rims. The new stock SportContact 6 is approved for speeds of up to 350 km/h. The tires fitted to the Edo Competition car were built at Continental’s car tire plant in Korbach, Germany. Even before its official launch, the SportContact 6 had already delivered maximum grip to help a Honda Civic Type R set a new lap record on the Nordschleife at the Nürburgring in the spring of 2015.
