Purpose of the role

To provide supervisory support to the management team in both front and back of house areas within the University’s Hospitality Service. To oversee the work of others and to supervise the delivery of high-quality hospitality services within a designated service area, ensuring customer expectations are consistently exceeded.

Main areas of responsibility:

  • Supervise the hospitality provision within a designated service area in order to meet legislative requirements and predetermined and published service standards. Work includes the organisation and supervision of staff and ensuring all elements of service meet and exceed customer expectations.
  • To assist the management team in developing and improving services within the designated service area and to make recommendations for staff training.
  • To order supplies appropriate to requirementsand oversee the management of stock within the immediate work area.
  • Supervise cash handling and cash registers in line with departmental policy toensure safe receipt and storage of takings and the profitability of the service.
  • Follow all University guidance, advice and instructions in relation to working practices. To use all food preparation and service equipment according to instruction and training, in order to ensure that all services are delivered in accordance with published guidance related to Health and Safety, and Food Hygiene in accordance with University policy and procedures.

General requirements /
  • The role requires the ability to use cookery and catering equipment extensively; lift and move objects frequently (using safe procedures) and to undertake activities in a variety of positions e.g. stretching and standing.
  • The role will require occasional evening and weekend working so the ability to be flexible around working times will be required – this will always be discussed/ agreed in advance.

  • Any appointment is generally made at the bottom of the salary range for the grade dependent upon experience and previous salary.
  • The hours for this permanent post are 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per year. Hours are normally 3.15 to 8.15 pm Monday to Friday although there will be some requirement to alter the shifts over the summer. Any changes to hours would be discussed/agreed in advance.
  • Annual leave entitlements are shown in the table below and increase after 5 years’ service. In addition, to the eight Bank Holidays, there are university discretionary days between Christmas and New Year. All leave, including bank holidays and discretionary days, is pro-rated for part-time employees.
