And finally...

Year 6 can potentially be an anxious time for the children as they begin to contemplate the SATs tests in May and their upcoming transition to secondary. With that in mind, please feel free to come in and chat if you or your child have concerns, or we are usually available by phone after school. We look forward to getting to know the children and yourselves better throughout the year.

‘The Groovy Greeks!’

Badgers and Bears Classes

A remarkable discovery!

On Monday, Mr Davis was digging behind our school hall when he made a remarkable discovery! There, in the dirt, was an orange and black artefact that looked like it didn’t belong there. On closer inspection, our children concluded that it had originated in Ancient Greece and that we needed to learn more about this amazing time in history!

English

Firstly, we will be learning about myths and legends (such as Theseus and The Minotaur) and writing our own version containing heroes and mythical creatures. Later in the term, we will be learning to write non-chronological reports, which will really give our experts the opportunity to showcase their knowledge on Ancient Greece! Writing to a ‘year 6 standard’ across the whole curriculum will be a major priority.

Maths

Over the next twelve weeks, we will be focusing on all aspects of number: place value, the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and fractions. We will be ensuring that all children are secure with their times tables up to 12 x 12.

Understanding our World

Topic learning this term isHistorybased, and we will be learning all about the Ancient Greeks; their lifestyle, history, battles, Gods they worshipped, the Olympics and myths and legends surrounding their culture. We will then learn about how their people and culture have had an impact on modern life, including studying Greek architecture and design, through Art and Design Technology, and the powerful legacy of the modern Olympics. We shall use Computing to find and present information, and in addition to this we will be continuing to learn how to design and make simple programs to follow commands.

Science

Children will build on their knowledge and understanding of different systems within the body. They will research the parts and functions of the circulatory system. They will focus on how nutrients are transported around the human body. They will also explore how a healthy lifestyle supports the body to function and how different types of drugs affect the body.

Physical Education

Our three focuses this term will be tag rugby, gym and badminton.

Personal, Social and Health Education
The unit ‘Our Happy School’will give us opportunities toconsider the rights and responsibilities we have, including to our own and others’ learning. We link to ICT by discussing the importance of staying safe online.

PPA cover – Mrs Milburn/Mrs Garret, Wednesdayafternoons

In RE the children will be asking two key questions; How important is it for a Muslim to show commitment to God? How significant is it that Mary was the mother of Jesus? In French they will use the theme of ‘The Olympics’ to express sporting preferences, and revise the key vocabulary of topics to be covered throughout Year 6.

Computing

We will be teaching the children how to be safe online, including using the internet and social media. Also how to use other technologies safely, such as mobile phones.
