Please note that you should not apply for either a work visa or a study visa.
In support of your visa application you will be required to submit the Welcoming and Visa letters.
If there is no South African representative in your home country, please apply to an embassy in the nearest neighbouring country.
Income tax
Post-doctoral awards are exempt from income tax in terms of the Higher Education South Africa binding class ruling (tax bracket) with the South African Revenue Service, provided the post-doctoral fellow is not an employee of the University.
Any remuneration earned above the post-doctoral award is subject to normal income tax laws and regulations.
Post-doctoral fellows who, in addition to their post-doctoral research responsibilities, voluntarily work more than 12 hours per week may be viewed as an employee and 100% of their award may become taxable.
Please note:
You will not be permitted, while in South Africa on a visitor's visa, to perform work or provide formal services for additional remuneration in the form of a salary of any kind.
2.3 Repatriation guarantee
It is currently expected of postdoctoral fellows to bear the cost of their own repatriation guarantee if they are not RSA citizens. The repatriation guarantee amount is determined by citizenship and varies from country to country.
2.4 Medical Aid Cover
South African legislation requires that persons entering South Africa on temporary residence permits must have sufficient medical aid cover from a scheme registered with the South African Council for Medical Schemes for the duration of the period for which the visa is issued (South African Medical Aid)

The University of Pretoria recommends that you become a member of either Momentum Health (Ingwe option) or Bestmed.
