Laundry and Dry-Cleaning
Chapter 15
Basic Laundry Products
¨ Soap vs Detergent
Ø Both remove soil, only detergents prevent soil from returning to fabric
¨ Bleach vs. Non-chlorine bleach
Ø Both maintain brightness of whites
Ø Non-chlorine bleach can also maintain brightness of colours
Ø Non-chlorine bleach can’t restore dingy fabric to white
§ Why use a dispenser or dilute bleach before putting in the washing machine?
· To prevent discolouration of fabric caused by splashing
¨ Fabric softener
Ø Liquid in final rinse (dispenser) – great for line drying
Ø Sheet in dryer
Ø Reduces absorbency – don’t use with towels, washcloths, diapers
Separating Your Laundry
¨ Separate your darks and lights
Ø Whites can pick up colour – especially manufactured fibres
Ø Can become grey after repeated washings (or pink, or blue!)
Ø Darks/colours should be washed in cold water to maintain brightness
Ø Whites should be washed in warm or hot
¨ Separate by fabric
Ø Cotton and linen– long wash, hot water
Ø Wools – cold water, short cycle
Ø Permanent press fabrics – warm then cool to prevent wrinkling
Ø Delicates (silk, nylon, lingerie, sheer and lacy, loose knits) – cold wash and rinse
Ø To prevent lint or pilling, don’t wash terry or fuzzy sweats with corduroy or velveteen.
¨ You may have several stacks when you are finished
· Lights
· Darks
· Whites
· Towels and sheets
· Hand-wash or delicates
Washing
¨ Check the pockets before washing
§ Lipstick, tissues, crayons, pens can create lint or stains!
¨ Three basic wash temperatures
§ Hot – for best clean, sanitizing, whites, can shrink some fabrics
§ Warm – many fabrics, especially durable press or manufactured fibres
§ Cold – for darks, lightly soiled, most economical, delicates
Drying
¨ Machine Drying Tips
§ Use appropriate heat and time length
§ Shake damp clothes before drying
§ Don’t overload dryer
§ Don’t overdry – wastes energy and increases wrinkles
§ Fold or hang clothes when still warm to reduce wrinkling
¨ Line Drying Tips
§ Shake out and smooth wrinkles before hanging
§ Place clothespins where marks won’t show
§ Use plastic hangers indoors where air can circulate
Ironing
§ Select the temperature for the fabric
§ If unsure, start with a low temperature to avoid damaging fabric
§ Iron on the wrong side, to avoid putting a shine on
§ Steam only for higher temperatures
§ Wait for steam to be hot enough, or water will spill onto garment
Dry Cleaning
§ Uses solvents (a chemical that dissolves another substance) to clean garments
§ Point out stains and their cause to professional
§ Some trims and buttons can be damaged by the process
§ Home dry-cleaning kits are available to freshen and deodorize lightly soiled garments between trips
