POETRY / SPEECH RECITAL GUIDELINES 2016/2017

CONTENT:Any published speech, part of a speech, and original speech (Grades 7 through 8) work of poetry, literature selection, or original poem, reading or composition. All student selections should have literary value that is of appropriate difficulty for the participant’s age and grade level.

CATEGORIES:1) ORATORY (traditional)
2) DRAMA (dramatization)

3) ORIGINAL (writing, own) Grades 7 through 8

TIME:Minimum of one minute, maximum of 3 minutes. Students in grade 1-2 may choose a shorter selection, if appropriate. Timing will start when the title is stated.

LOCATION:Jr. High Auditorium

GENERAL GUIDELINES:

INTRODUCTION:Students should begin their presentations by introducing themselves, and continue with a brief introduction that excites the audience and includes the title and author of their selection. The introduction should be delivered in a natural speaking voice using a conversational style.

DELIVERY:Selections should be carefully chosen to fit student personalities and abilities, as well as desired performance category (oratory, recitation or dramatization). They should be memorized and delivered using direct eye contact with the audience. Facial expressions and vocal inflections should be used to create realistic characterization. Students should deliver selections with confidence and a “sing-song” delivery should be avoided. Please remember to HAVE FUN!

ORATORY:Students should understand the focus of their selection and be able to use their voices to depict all images and characterization. Students should stand in a comfortable stance to deliver their selections. When a recitation is finished, the student should lower his/her head. Never make statements like “The End” or “That’s it.” Students may write their own selection.

DRAMA:Students should use exaggerated hand and body movements and gestures, in addition to vocal inflections, in dramatizing and acting out their selections (similar to a stage performance or play).

Students may write their own selection. Props are optional.

ORIGINAL:Grades 7 – 8 only.

Students will present their recitations to their classes byNovember 15, 2016. They will be judged by a teacher or teachers (other than homeroom) who will select the top six finalists in each category from each grade. The top three presenters in each grade in each category during the finals will be selected as school winners.
