An Overview of the Alliance for Connected Care

THE ALLIANCE FOR CONNECTED CARE (THE ALLIANCE)

The Alliance for Connected Care is a 501(c)(6) organization that was formed to create a statutory and regulatory environment in which every medical provider in America is permitted to deliver and be adequately compensated for providing safe, high-quality care using “Connected Care” at his or her discretion, regardless of care delivery location or technological modality. Our members are leading health care companies from across the health care spectrum, representing insurers, retail pharmacies, technology companies, telecommunications companies, and health care entrepreneurs. We are advised by a distinguished group of patient and provider advocacy organizations, as well as Senators Daschle, Lott and Breaux.

THE ISSUE

“Connected Care” is the real-time, electronic communication between a patient and a medical provider, including telehealth, remote patient monitoring, and secure email communication between clinicians and their patients. As the American health care system moves toward more accountable care, remote patient communication and monitoring will play an increasingly important role in patient services. Connected Care improves access to care, may help providers and patients avoid costly medical services, and increases the convenience of care for patients.

However, despite the rapidly developing technology and increasing interest among patients and physicians in using Connected Care, regulatory and statutory barriers continue to limit mainstream acceptance of Connected Care technology. To achieve the promise of Connected Care in our health care system, there must be renewed urgency among policy makers to foster a regulatory structure that enables safe and accessible use of remote patient care technology.

OUR OBJECTIVES

Ultimately, the goal of the Alliance will be to create a regulatory and statutory environment in which every medical provider in America is permitted to deliver safe, high-quality care using telehealth technology at his or her discretion, and be compensated at a consistent rate regardless of care delivery location or technological delivery method. Specifically, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate the importance of Connected Care as a tool for improved quality and efficiency.
  • Build significant and high-level support for Connected Care among leaders in Congress and the Administration.
  • Include telehealth, remote patient monitoring and other Connected Care technology as a tool to support new models of care and payment.
  • Lift federal and state regulatory and statutory barriers to Connected Care.
  • Establish a non-binding, standardized definition of Connected Care through a federal-levelmultistakeholder process.

OUR TEAM

The Alliance is led by Former Majority Leaders Tom Daschle and Trent Lott, and former Senior Senator John Breaux. The team includes former Obama Administration appointees, Department of Health and Human Services officials, FCC staff and bi-partisan former Hill staffers from offices of senior members.
