GENERAL INFORMATION

JOB TITLE: Passenger Assistant

RESPONSIBLE TO: Fleet & Monitoring Manager

LOCATION: Within the Cheshire East area

SALARY SCALE: 3

HOURS WORKED: 10 - 20

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Permanent (term-time only)

DISCLOSURE REQUIRED: Enhanced DBS

ROLE PURPOSE

The main purpose of the Passenger Assistant is to act as an escort on Transport Service Solution (TSS) vehicles. Passengers transported by TSS may have learning, mobility, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties which may require additional support from the Passenger Assistant.

The main roles and responsibilities of the post are:

·  To assist passengers travelling on TSS vehicles to and from their destination; to assist with getting on and off the vehicle; carrying and stowing luggage and equipment as required; and to ensure the passengers’ comfort and safety at all times

·  To assist the driver by route finding and giving directions when manoeuvring the vehicle

·  To liaise, as appropriate, between TSS operations staff, service purchasers, carers and parents to ensure quality of service provision

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. To assist passengers travelling on TSS vehicles to and from their destination, to assist with luggage and shopping if required, to assist passengers when the lift, ramp or any other boarding aid is required and to ensure their comfort and safety

2. To assist the driver by route finding and giving directions when manoeuvring and reversing the vehicle

3. To work with the driver to keep the vehicle clean and tidy before, during and after the journey

4. To respect the independence of users and observe guidelines on professional standards of behaviour, as appropriate, to include liaison with colleagues, service purchasers, carers and parents so as to ensure quality of service provision

5 To demonstrate responsibility for promoting and championing all aspects of equal opportunities; valuing and managing diversity in all areas of one’s work

6. To ensure compliance with all relevant policies adopted by either TSS, education, care or residential establishments in relation to passenger transport, e.g. Health and Safety

1. Passenger Assistance

1.1 To supervise passengers whilst boarding or alighting vehicles during their journey and to offer and provide assistance, if required

1.2 To assist passengers when the lift, ramp or any other boarding aid is required

1.3 To ensure all passengers carried are safe by the correct use of seatbelts, wheelchair tie-downs and any other safety equipment at all times

1.4 To ensure that safety standards are maintained at all times, for example by ensuring that doors are properly closed, seatbelts fastened and luggage stowed securely, meeting any specific personal needs

1.5 To assist with the safe evacuation of the vehicle and supervision of the passengers in the event of an emergency

1.6 To behave in a way that is professional and caring, but not to become involved in the private lives of passengers outside your working duties.

2. Driver assistance

2.1 To ensure that the drivers are not distracted by the passengers during the course of their duties

2.2 To identify particular locations on a map and assist in finding an appropriate route for the vehicle

2.3 To assist the driver by providing directions when the vehicle is being reversed or manoeuvred in a tight space

2.4 To provide other assistance, as requested, in relation to the lift or ramp and any other equipment carried on the bus

2.5 To clean up in relation to sickness and incontinence problems, and to work with the driver to keep the vehicle clean and tidy before, during and after the journey

3. General

3.4 To undertake any other tasks or duties as requested providing that these are relevant to running an effective passenger service and are commensurate with the status and remuneration for this post

Notwithstanding the detail in this job description, in accordance with the TSS Flexibility Policy the job holder will undertake such work as may be determined by TSS from time to time, up to or at a level consistent with the Principal Responsibilities of the job and in any location within the Borough of Cheshire East.
