Admissions Criteria for LEAP @ Mesilla Valley Alternative Middle School
Las Cruces Public Schools’ Mesilla Valley Alternative Middle School (MVAMS) is designed for students in grades 6 through 8 who would like to learn in an alternative setting where the learning is project based and individualized. LEAP is for students that mayhave academic gaps or just may not be thriving in a traditional middle school setting. The goal is to provide accelerated instruction through the use of project based learning to address individual skills and prepare students for success in high school. Students selected for LEAP @ MVAMS have the potential for success and are motivated to succeed.
Admission is based on the following criteria:
1)Parent/guardian approval is needed for the admission and enrollment process.
2)An interview must be conducted with the student and theparent/guardian.
Admission Process
- Parents/guardians must fully complete the application for admission. Applications are available through the student’s current school or at MVAMS. Completed applications may be returned to the school’s office staff that will then forward it to the MVAMS administration.
- An interview by the MVAMS staff will be arranged for the parent and student.
- Interviews are used to share information concerning the expectations of the LEAP program and to gain an understanding of the student’s needs to determine whether or not placement in LEAP is the best learning environment for the student.
- All students must be involved in the interview process prior to admission. Interviews are a three-step process involving:
• A meeting to go over the program and related expectations.
• A tour of facilities and introduction to staff.
• An acknowledgement of program expectations.
Non-compliance with any of the abovewould result in a non-acceptance decision.
- An admissions committee will decide whether the application is approved.
- The parent and student will be notified of the outcome.
