ACADEMIC SEMINAR
Understanding Civil Resistance: Nonviolent Struggles for Democracy and Justice
Sarajevo, May 11-12, 2015
The Faculty of Political Science-University of Sarajevo (FPN) and the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict, Washington, D.C. (ICNC), are organizing an academic seminar on civil resistance. The target audience is graduate students, junior faculty, and researchers with an interest in civil resistance and nonviolent conflict. The goal of the seminar is to promote the study, research and teaching in the growing field of civil resistance studies. In the past four years ICNC organized more than 20 different academic seminars at various institutions of higher education around the world.
The topics that will be covered in the seminar include: Power and dynamics of civil resistance movements; Effectiveness of civil resistance; Strategies and Tactics of civil resistance; Civil resistance and repression; Civil resistance, nonviolent discipline and radical flank; Third party actors and civil resistance; Civil resistance and defections; Civil resistance and democratization. The ICNC instructors who deliver the content of the seminars include its staff, academic advisors and other collaborators. ICNC will develop an e-class to support the teaching prior to the start of our seminar, including a program and resources for each session. Participants will not be required to read resources prior to our seminar.
The seminar will be hosted at the Faculty of Political Science Sarajevo (Skenderija 72, 71000 Sarajevo, BiH). Sessions of the seminar will run from 9:00 till 17:00 on May 11 and 12 (with short breaks and a longer lunch break in-between). Only registered participants will be able to attend the seminar and attendance for the full length of the seminar is required. All sessions will be held in English and a good working knowledge of English language is necessary. The seminar is free of charge, but participants traveling to Sarajevo are expected to cover their own travel and lodging expenses. Lunch and refreshments will be provided for the duration of the seminar.
As the number of participants is limited all interested candidates are advised to apply as early as possible. The application deadline is April 20 and participation will be confirmed by the end of April. Filled in applications should be sent to and no other supporting documentation is needed.
