HOLIDAY DECORATION POLICY Section: 6-5

Purpose: To provide the maximum level of compliance with the Connecticut State Fire Code

Scope: All areas of the Facility

Policy: All decorations must comply with the following:

·  All decorations shall be placed so that they do not block access to, egress from, or visibility of an exit.

·  All decorations shall be proven to be fire resistant. (save the package they came in.)

·  The use of lit candles is prohibited.

·  Decorations treated with fire resistant chemical by the user are not permitted.

·  Wall decorations are to be kept to a minimum.

·  Flammable materials, as straw, cotton/gauze, dried vines, live greens or live wreaths, etc. cannot be used in displays.

·  Corridor fire doors cannot be decorated to look like holiday packages. Decorations cannot not be attached to corridor handrails making the handrails difficult for resident use.

·  Cut, dried or aluminum trees, and dried floral arrangements are not permitted.

·  Only U.L. Listed light strings (the type that do not produce heat) will be allowed and they are not to be used as a general decoration, i.e. hanging from window drapes, on doors etc.

·  Only one extension cord can be used and it must also be U.L. listed and not more than 12 feet in length.

·  Extension cords shall not be placed through doors, across hallways or attached to ceilings.

·  Ordinary crepe paper and pyroxylin plastic decorations are not permitted.

·  No decorations shall be placed so that they interfere with a sprinkler.

·  After the holidays, decorations are not to be stored on the nursing units.

·  The Fire & Safety Office reserves the right to immediately abate hazards as needed.
