Welcome to the DixonHigh School Physical Education Experience! Hopefully this welcome letter finds you well and looking forward to a productive semester.
This semester your student will be a participating member of my Advanced Physical Education class. All students are expected to dress out and participate, as well as maintain a positive attitude and display sportsmanship. Students will participate in daily fitness programs, as well as a variety of lifetime sports and recreational activities. All activities are designed to help your student develop competency in a variety of movement forms, demonstrate understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics, exhibit a healthy active lifestyle, and exhibit responsible personal and social behavior interaction.

ADVANCED PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSE SYLLABUS
Instructors: Coach Buchanan, Coach Raynor
Equipment Needed: Gym shorts or pants (NO SOFFE shorts or spandex allowed. Shorts must come to mid thigh), appropriate shirts/sweatshirts, socks, tennis shoes. During Health: notebook, writing utensil.
Course Purpose: Advanced PE is an elective course that is offered to those who have successfully completed Heath and PE. Physical Education units are planned to develop competency in many movement forms, a healthy lifestyle, responsible personal and social behavior in a physical setting, and knowledge about movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics, as well as enhance each of the four health-related fitness components: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition.

Grading Policy:
80% - Participation and responsible personal and social behavior (i.e.-sportsmanship and fulfilling team duties and responsibilities).
- Students start off with 10 points each day. Not dressing out will result in loss of points for the day. Students who are absent have the opportunity to make up points lost. Points will be deducted for lack of effort and lack of participation. Students not showing good sportsmanship will not be permitted to participate which will result in a loss of participation points.
20% - Projects
Final Exam = 25% of total grade

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT POLICY
Physical Education Class Guidelines
Instructors: Coach Buchanan, Coach Raynor, Coach Brown, Coach Iseman
- Be prompt: Students should be in the locker room, gym, or weight room before the tardy bell rings. See instructor.
- Be prepared. Students will dress daily for physical education class and come to class with materials needed for health.
- Dress out gear. Appropriate shirts and gym pants are required. Muscle shirts, spandex, Soffe shorts, and other short shorts are not allowed. Shirt sleeves should extend to a point on the upper arm not to expose the armpit. Warm up pants and sweatshirts are allowed. Logos of poor taste are not allowed. Tennis shoes and white socks are also needed. Students will not be allowed to participate with any shoes other than a tennis shoe. Students must change clothes before and after class.
- Food, drinks, gum, and hats are not allowed.Due to the importance of rehydration, plastic bottles of water will be allowed.
- Cell phones, iPods, iPads, and other electronic devices will be allowed only with the expressed permission of the instructor in order to complete an instructional activity or objective.
- The school staff or physical education instructors are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Students need to bring a padlock to lock items in lockers during class. Gym lockers are to be used only during your particular class. Other classes throughout the day share these same lockers, so please do not leave personal gear or locks on the lockers.
- Locker rooms will be locked. Please take care of all needs prior to leaving locker room.
- Only notes signed from a licensed medical doctor may excuse the student from daily activities. Any student with an existing medical condition shall inform their instructor ASAP. All medical conditions shall be followed up with doctor’s documentation.
- Students are allowed to make up missed work due to an absence. We also have tutoring sessions. Check with your instructor for make up work and tutorial times.
- We do have shower facilities for students to use after class.
- All physical education classes have a designated area. See your instructor.
- Please help keep the gym, lobby, and locker rooms clean.
