Mongolian Traditional Knife. This knife was made by a man named Erentei a highly skilled knife smith. At least one of Erentei’s works is in St. Petersburg at the Ermitag Museum…one of the largest museum in the world. This knife has been in a Mongolian family for three generations, who have made their mark in Mongolian wrestling. The current owner is D. Tsendayush who is a judo master and won the World Championship, Madrid Spain in 1981…1982 he won second in the World Championships in France. He is now a police Colonel in Galt soum in Huvsgol, Mongolia. He inherited the knife from his father L. Dambajav 1921-1996 who was a nomadic herder in Mongolia. His grandfather Luuzanbazar (Lo zun ba za) 1867-1932 was the first owner the knife. He was a nomadic herder in Mongolia and traded for the knife from Erentei. The total weight of the knife and accessories is about 3 kilos. The knife itself weighs about 400 grams. There are two accessories (what I call medallions) with gold plated dragon heads…these two maedallions hang from leather straps from Tsendayush’s belt in the picture below. The medallion with the silver chain, gold/silver button and medallion weighs about 890 grams….the other medallion and chain connected to the knife weighs about 620 grams. All the chains, medallions are silver and are gold plated as shown on the scans below. The knife’s handle is made the white bark from a birchwood tree...the bark is compressed together and then boiled in oil...the blade appears to be steel. The knife’s blade has numerous nicks as this knife was an all purpose knife used for hunting wolves, wild pigs, slaughtering animals, etc,…basically a working herder’s knife and for formal wear. There are also two chopsticks in the knife sheath with silver tips…the chopsticks are made of ivory. The knife is about 15.5 inches long from top of handle to tip of knife blade…the blade is about 7 ¾ inches long. The knife's sheath is made of sandalwood from India and used to have a special smell...but the smell has faded out over the years. The accessory that looks like a steel axe blade is actually a flint and steel lighter...the flint fits inside of the leather case which is gold plated, as seen in the scan below...a flintstone will come with the knife.
